At first friends and some family thought what’s the point in doing this when millions aren’t? When I explained how everyone taking part in this has made such a massive difference to the future planet. And more of them are now coming around to our way of thinking 😁

YAY!  I believe that the more people that see others taking action, the more people will feel comfortable doing it themselves.  It has been fun doing this challenge with you and the others Bev.  :-)

My husband, mother, and I participated in a clean-up of Reed's Beach yesterday evening.  I was very impressed by the fact that the beach was already very well kept. The main thing on the beach was deceased horseshoe crabs (common this time of year) and plovers. Very little trash was collected, but the group had a good time chatting about the local habitat, how we can help avoid pollution, etc.  The Cape May County Zoo hosted the clean-up effort. They are amazing people!

Hi Lisa, this is great news! I hope the US will follow the EU's lead, even if we have to do it state-by-state.

I just want to tell you and your team to keep up the good work!

It’s going well. I am now much more aware of the products I can buy with out plastic. I am thinking much more when I shop. There are plenty of places to buy items with out plastic on the internet. Just wish we had more local shops.

It’s very easy to use reusable bags. I permanently keep them in my everyday hold-all.

It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

At work, I try my best to use a mug or cup to avoid disposables. I have made comments to my coworkers to encourage them to use reusable water bottles to reduce drinking from plastic water bottles. We have the water dispensers so water is available, just need to get them to switch over. I recently suggested we get a water dispenser in our conference room to promote this and reduce use of plastic water bottles.

This was not a difficult challenge for me, as I always have reusable bags in my car. I feel very good carrying the bags into the store knowing the difference I am making.

My husband and I went to our favorite Mexican treat shop last evening where we saw that they had bamboo disposable utensils and I was inspired.  I wanted to see what options are available for biodegradable utensils and propose that we make the switch at work.  In this way, even if they go to a land fill, we’re not adding anything that will still be here 500 years from now and not adding any toxic chemicals associated with conventional plastic (such as polyvinyl chloride or dioxin).

How could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?

I've been fortunate that the restaurants that I visit have not had an issue with this at all. One of the young servers even commented how much she liked the idea and wanted to start doing this as well.
