When you check-in on the current day you get 25 points! I have been cheating myself out of points because I don't check-in until the following day after going to the grocery store the previous evening. I don't check-in over the weekend because I'm always off on an outdoor adventure. I will be driving to Adirondack Park in New York State for a week-long vacation. Mobile reception is very poor out there, as the nearest cell tower is 12 miles distant from where I'll be staying. I will try to score some check-ins next week but it may not be possible. {:-(

I bought organic apples yesterday and automatically reached for the plastic produce bag dispenser. Luckily, I caught myself just in time and remembered to use the cloth sack I had tucked-away in my canvas shopping bag.  {:-)

How hard was it to check out when they couldn't see the sticker through a plastic bag?

I was going to do a waste audit as one of my Challenges, but looks like I'm not going to get that accomplished. I've been busy with other activities this July, and just don't have the focus to count every piece of trash that I generate. However, I did switch from using polyester and polyurethane kitchen scrub sponges to Pura Naturals, which are made from plant-based renewable resources without plastics or petroleum by-products. They don't say exactly what they're made from, and the texture is firmer than what I'm used to, but I suppose I'm doing something good for Mother Earth!

I missed a check-in last week because you can only go back 3 days to check-in retroactively. I am finding this to be the hardest EcoChallenge I have participated in. This is partly due to the Daily Challenges I chose that I don't actually do on a daily basis, and that much of the produce in stores is already packaged in a plastic bag or box. The other reason is that it's summertime and difficult to keep-up with the check-ins over the weekend and during vacation week.

How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

Not accepting any disposable bags when making purchases and purchasing produce without plastic packaging is quite challenging! Yesterday I brought some plastic produce bags from home to reuse at the grocery store. The first bag I used got ripped by an apple stem and I had to use another bag. I purchased one head each of green-leaf and red-leaf lettuce, but they already came wrapped in a plastic mesh sleeve. I should've bought the Boston, or Bibb, lettuce as it was the only lettuce not wrapped in plastic. }:-(

I attended a family gathering this weekend that involved camping-out and whitewater rafting. Instead of using the plastic cutlery provided during mealtimes, I used my bamboo utensil set. Family members asked where they could get a bamboo utensil set and I told them to look-up To-Go-Ware online.

Yesterday I was going to pick up a few items at the grocery store but realized I had no shopping bags in my car. I decided that the few items I wanted could wait until tomorrow. Thus, I accomplished a daily Challenge by not accepting any plastic bags.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I think plastic packaging has become so prevalent because it is perceived to be convenient and sanitary. Getting pre-washed lettuce leaves in a plastic box is preferrable to handling a whole head of lettuce with the soil still clinging to it.

At www.trexrecycling.com you can find out where to drop off plastic packaging in nearly any state for them to remake it into trex "wood" for decks and such.  FYI

What I mean to say is, when we are not involved in the growing, harvesting and preparation of our food, we become too focused on the perfection of the end "product" beautifully displayed on the supermarket shelf. Food becomes more of a commodity, and less of an integral part of our daily lives.

I attended a casual dinner and glow-party dance. I remembered to bring my bamboo ware to avoid using the plastic ware. I also brought my own reusable plastic wine cups. Unfortunately, the dessert cake was served with a fork stuck in each slice. As for the glow party, I'm trying to figure out ways to reuse the plastic glow necklaces and bracelets I received.

The glow party sounds like fun! Minus the plastic waste :)

I attended a 4th of July party and forgot to bring my Spork and my Bamboo Ware utensil set!  }:-@  Had to use the plastic ware and tossed them in the trash just like everyone else.  {:-(  At least I had my own plastic cup and used that one cup all day.  ]:-)  I even saved the tiny little cup that a Jello shot was served in!  ]:-D
