My husband, mother, and I participated in a clean-up of Reed's Beach yesterday evening.  I was very impressed by the fact that the beach was already very well kept. The main thing on the beach was deceased horseshoe crabs (common this time of year) and plovers. Very little trash was collected, but the group had a good time chatting about the local habitat, how we can help avoid pollution, etc.  The Cape May County Zoo hosted the clean-up effort. They are amazing people!

Hi Lisa, this is great news! I hope the US will follow the EU's lead, even if we have to do it state-by-state.

I just want to tell you and your team to keep up the good work!

My husband and I went to our favorite Mexican treat shop last evening where we saw that they had bamboo disposable utensils and I was inspired.  I wanted to see what options are available for biodegradable utensils and propose that we make the switch at work.  In this way, even if they go to a land fill, we’re not adding anything that will still be here 500 years from now and not adding any toxic chemicals associated with conventional plastic (such as polyvinyl chloride or dioxin).

How could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?

I've been fortunate that the restaurants that I visit have not had an issue with this at all. One of the young servers even commented how much she liked the idea and wanted to start doing this as well.

My husband and I watched "Garbage Island", a documentary about the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch".  It made me heartsick.  It really stresses how we are impacting our environment and all creatures in it - including us! Our dependency upon plastic needs to end and/or at least move to biodegradable plant based plastics.

I was inspired by Lorraine's recent post showing her reusable produce bags, so I went on Etsy.com and purchased a set for my family as well.  I'll be giving a couple to my mother and keeping a couple for myself.  These will be great for the grocer!  Our local farm stands already avoid plastic and use mainly paper bags, but these will be useful in helping them save their bags too.

Sometimes it feels like we're fighting against a tide of apathy, but working with others to make a difference and participating in EcoChallenges really drives home how we're all connected in our communities and in the world. Working with others towards a common goal and sharing knowledge makes my heart very happy. :-)

Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

I bought organic tooth cleaning powder from Butter Me Up Organics this past weekend. It is in a reusable glass jar so I can purchase refills. I plan to stop buying toothpaste in plastic tubes and ask my local grocers to carry toothpaste in metal tubes and/or tooth cleaning powder in glass jars.  I'll even provide a few suggestions for product options.  I'll make the case that I'd rather buy from the grocer, but cannot until they offer eco-friendly alternatives for those of us who are trying to reduce our plastic dependencies.
