One of the biggest things I learned is just how hard it is to get away from plastic containers.  They're everywhere.  The metal tumbler I use at work in lieu of disposable cups has a plastic lid.  I don't want to give up eating berries, which are one of summer's great pleasures, but no one puts them out in cardboard containers any more--just plastic boxes.  I have a friend going through chemo--the drip comes in a plastic bag through plastic tubing.  I reuse store bags to pick up after my dogs but unless I want to give up walking them, I can't avoid using plastic bags.  A paper bag won't survive a 40 minute walk.

But all of the vital and, in some cases, life-saving properties of plastic make me realize how much it matters to cut back wherever we can.  Bringing a mug and tumbler to work for coffee and water doesn't seem like it makes a big difference--until I see all the Styrofoam cups left in the trash by the folks who don't go for something reusable.  Refilling, reusing and finding alternatives may be difficult, but they're critical to keeping the planet healthy.  And speaking up, gently and kindly, can help too.  No one wants to be lectured, but there are ways to talk to people that leave them feeling open to thinking differently vs written off for thinking differently.

Thanks for doing the challenge.  It's a great way to keep us all thinking and making changes that matter.

So far the challenge is going very well. We continue to do the things out in the community that we normally do and now we are showing it to the WORLD! LOL. But in all seriousness, this is an opportunity to get out and walk the walk!

I joined the challenge because there's something about putting my goals in writing that motivates me (no different than logging my food intake with Weight Watchers :-)  It gives me a sense of accountability.  And hopefully through my efforts, someone will see my actions and they will be encouraged to make their own actions.

    Let's go Bank of America!!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Personal Care Tim Taylor Your Beauty Products
Homemade makeup is a practice which has been done in community for thousands of centuries as many indigenous women relied on plants for their bright make up. How can you incorporate that sense of community as you embark on a similar pursuit?

having a "girls day" where we can make our own face masks, hair masks, makeup remover would be a good way to incorporate the sense of community.

I've been using a Sip by S'well water bottle and I love how it keeps my water the perfect temp even in this warm weather we have been having
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Water Bottles
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I believe products contain so much plastic because as consumers, we tend to choose the most convenient options presented to us, which typically include serving sized packaged foods ready for "grab and go". I myself am guilty of this as I sometimes feel overwhelmed at the thought of having to carve specific time out of my days to go to farmer's markets, stores with bulk bins, etc. The awareness is definitely growing but at least here in Charlotte, we have a long way to go in terms of the options available for more sustainably packaged food options. When I go to the typical grocery store, I cringe at the amount of plastic I see in the produce section. Individually wrapped cucumbers, pre-sliced and vacuum sealed avocados (yes, these exist), single serve carrot packs or chip bags. The answer is to simply spend a few minutes a week buying bulk items and dividing them up yourself, but the challenge is getting people to opt for sustainability over convenience.

Fore those in the Charlotte area: please share if you have any lunch spots that are plastic-free! Of course bringing your own food is preferred, but we all know time is of the essence. Would love to hear from you if you have any recommendations.

where are you located?  I think Sabor does a good job of having compostable utensils/stuff.  its hard to find restaurants that actually care about trying to reduce plastic tho.  :(
Most sit-down restaurants ( I was at Basil last week) don't generally use too much plastic, its the quick-service places that go for that convenience.

    Food Skip the Straw
Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

yes, it hasn't been has extended as it should be. There are a couple of places around my neighborhood that already made the change and at some local bars they have a message that they will give an straw only if you ask.

    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

I send a FB message to the Showmars people because they use too much plastic, I stopped going there for lunch because they never replied back. I pretty much eat all the time at Soho Bistro, no plastic waste.
