Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

My final thoughts on the ecochallenge are that, if you want to change a behavior, it's worthwhile to participate in a group like this.  A lot of folks didn't get that the point of checking in every day is that it keeps the challenge on your mind; without checking in, over the course of a month i would have still had good intentions of picking up trash every day but would have thought about it less frequently and then not done it at all.  Reading and writing in the feed makes you feel closer to your teammates and other participants who participate.  Focusing for a month on an action really helps you understand why the action is beneficial or what element of it you haven't understood previously.  You have regular "ah-ha" moments and you are more open to learning and making changes on a deeper level.

I agree with you Kim! This challenge has made me realize I need to make conscious choices each day--moving away from plastic as a  "convenience" to the days that plastic was not so common. I grew up after WWII and my parents/family did not use plastic items until we moved to the States in the 70s. Now, we want to be good stewards for future generations.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

The producers and retailers.  It groups like objects and ensures they don't get confused with other, similar items.  It's about getting every dime for every piece of produce.

Challenge has been great! I love being part of a team that is passionate about making a difference in the workplace in regards to recycling and with the environment.  I'd love to see COG do monthly or quarterly clean-ups around Gainesville to keep the initiative going.  :)

It has definitely raised my awareness. We just need to educate others that may not know.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care Pearly Whites
Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

Influencing manufacturers is daunting. However, I can set an example by using different products and sharing my experiences with family, friends and coworkers.

I remember a product from past years --- dental powder in a metal can....maybe manufacturers can return to this type of packaging (though it was different than paste which most people are accustomed to now)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Personal Care Fresh as a Daisy
Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

Not personally or evidentially, but I feel like aluminum deodorant (and other products) are correlated (in my memory at least) with my grandfather's Alzheimer's Disease.

Didn't see a place for personal challenge description. Here's one thing I've started doing recently. My medications are mailed in plastic mailing pouches. I'm taking the pouch and filling with dryer lint and collected pet hair. Once filled, I seal it off with tape. Now I have a reusable pouch to put between dishes or breakable items for moving or storage. So not quite bubble wrap but close. I also keep all the pouches that are made with bubble wrap that come in the mail. My goal is to not buy any plastic packing material for my next move (I move a lot it seems).
