Products that started in the military complex have made their way into homes and now, such a short time later, its hard to imagine the kitchen without them. Kathleen Walston Pagan 7/30/2019 12:05 PMAn interesting article on the chronology of single use aluminum and plastic wrap! No mention of tupperware. I know one European who has commented that in Ireland glass containers are often reused-- not for the original purpose but for other household needs. The day to day life is sometimes different--less large shops so people stop by bakeries and green grocers more often so may not store food in plastic as much.

Sally Adkins 7/23/2019 10:03 AMThanks Kim and Crystal. Yes - I have tried to get compostable bags for all of the dog stations at the City and County, but none of them are "certified" compostable. And the ones that are don't make the bags that fit into the dog bag stations. This is a place where a good alternative solution is welcome! We need a better pet waste treatment system! -
Kim Harris 7/22/2019 6:07 PMKristen's right. You have to be careful when buying "biodegradable" or "compostable" plastics. Often "compostable" requires an industrial composter to break down the bags, but we don't have one in Alachua County. -
Kristen Bryant 7/22/2019 11:36 AMI think I have seen compostable trash bags on amazon. Life unplastic had a great article about what to look for, some biodegradable ones just breakdown into micro plastic.

Sally Adkins 7/18/2019 7:17 AMI've often thought about utilizing Terracycle for all of these plastics that I cant recycle. I, too, wish there was a way to recycle clamshells. It would be so great for the City to participate in Terracycle in the workplace, but I wonder how long it would take to fill one of these up - it might get expensive. https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/zero_waste_boxes/break-room-separation -
