Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

Influencing manufacturers is daunting. However, I can set an example by using different products and sharing my experiences with family, friends and coworkers.

I remember a product from past years --- dental powder in a metal can....maybe manufacturers can return to this type of packaging (though it was different than paste which most people are accustomed to now)

Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

Not personally or evidentially, but I feel like aluminum deodorant (and other products) are correlated (in my memory at least) with my grandfather's Alzheimer's Disease.

Didn't see a place for personal challenge description. Here's one thing I've started doing recently. My medications are mailed in plastic mailing pouches. I'm taking the pouch and filling with dryer lint and collected pet hair. Once filled, I seal it off with tape. Now I have a reusable pouch to put between dishes or breakable items for moving or storage. So not quite bubble wrap but close. I also keep all the pouches that are made with bubble wrap that come in the mail. My goal is to not buy any plastic packing material for my next move (I move a lot it seems).

Do some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?

Too many. It is a struggle to find viable, affordable alternatives for many items. I don't buy where I can, but when a product does have it, I will reuse it as much as possible. For example, I kept all the foam packing and box when I got a TV as a gift. It makes it easier/safer when moving and reduces the need for packing material. Peanuts, etc, are reused too.
Alternatives to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are very expensive and uses metals that must be mined/smelted, etc. If I'm building something that needs strong but lightweight materials, weighing all the options, PVC usually makes the most sense unfortunately. However, I don't use anything disposably. I build something, take it apart, reuse the pieces to build something else.

How are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?

All living creatures are connected to the environment. Scooping poop keeps waste out of the soil and ground water. Reduces the need to clean off shoes too!

Other species can teach us important lessons about ourselves and life in general. What has your cat taught you?

My cat is not eco friendly, but she has taught me to nap when possible.

Does making your own pet food seem like a habit you can keep up in the long term? What else can you do to reduce your use of plastic packaging that can come from taking care of your pet's needs?
