    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

Our neighbors constantly use plastic cutlery and paper plates & napkins.  Their wedding anniversary is right around the corner, so instead of being pushy, I thought a gift would be a way to get them to switch (or at least somewhat) to stop using disposables.  🤞
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

I had purchased rice and beans in plastic bags in the past.  No more!  I have a stack of brown paper lunch bags that I keep with my grocery & produce bags for the additional bulk items I have added to my pantry.  And then into mason (style) jars.  No more plastic in my pantry!

This has been an amazing challenge!  I thought I was good prior but this really made me focus and think more about things and the lasting impact to the environment.   I am so proud to be a member for this challenge, our team  ROCKS!  ♻

In what ways does your pet make your life happier, more interesting, or more rewarding?

My pups bring an infinite amount of love, joy and happiness to our home.  Regardless if it has been a lousy of a day there are two faces that are always happy I am theirs.  It is my responsibility to give them the best that I possibly can, so I have (and part of the motivation has been this challenge) begun making their food and trying my hand at making doggy shampoo.  Only the best for my pups!

The recipe was pretty simple, uncooked oatmeal flour, baking soda & water. It was a little messy to apply but they both smell good; like a couple of cookies!

At the grocery, Sunday, I was grabbing a few items in the produce department & using  cloth bags for my items.  An employee asked if they were out of plastic bags, nope they weren't. I explained why I use an alternative and suggested they do the same - paper bags.  He said he would submit the suggestion to the powers that be, in all honesty I doubt a change will happen but at least I tried.  🤞

Personal Care That Was a Close Shave
What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

My showers finally stopped looking like a crime scene, well, most days anyway.  It took some getting use to the hang of using an Albatross razor but the shave is closer, love the feel of the razor and not to mention it is cool looking.  My husband is even on board with his.  The idea of disposable razors can be attractive to some but just the crappy shave you get hopefully will convince some to give them up.  I think some razor gifts are in order for a lucky few.

Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

I thought a great way to spread the word, there are alternative to the "traditional" plastic toothpaste tubes, was to give some out to a few friends yesterday.  I have to admit they were a bit skeptical that the tooth powder would work was the main concern.  The jury is still out if they will make the switch but at the very least a seed has been planted and I am hoping they will pause before making their next purchase.  🤞

I was pleased to see our plastic waste isn't to great but clearly there are some changes to be made.  I am switching the remainder of my bath products to plastic free containers.
