REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Just Say NoDo some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?
Christopher Selin 7/30/2019 9:27 PMLuckily CA has mitigated polystyrene in packaging materials but the odd item like smoke detector housing is still built with it. PVC is apparently most wastefully used as the frustrationful packaging that requires a knife to open, what a pain and bad for the environment! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Christopher Selin 7/30/2019 9:21 PMThere is still a ton of avoidable plastic waste created even with visits to the bulk section with my own containers. Will try to think twice about buying individually wrapped snacks, especially for the kids in the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Christopher Selin 7/30/2019 9:20 PMSo many! Less water usage, less waste manufacturing, less energy, less chemicals poisoning the environment and those that make the clothes. Seems like a no brained. If only the true cost of manufacturing was built into the price of our goods... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy Unpackaged ProduceWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Christopher Selin 7/30/2019 9:18 PMIt’s serving the consumer who only cares about convenience at the cost of those that deal with the waste: animals, third world countries that accept our recyclables, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Minimize PackagingWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Christopher Selin 7/30/2019 9:17 PMIt definitely makes me think twice before going into the middle packaged food section. Also, it seems like prices aren’t always cheaper for bulk goods which is a bit surprising but shows that the true cost of packaging isn’t built in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Swap the SnacksHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Christopher Selin 7/30/2019 9:15 PMFresh snacks are almost always more wholesome and/or healthier and I’m finding that living life more intentionally is actually more rewarding that chasing convenience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Christopher Selin 7/30/2019 9:13 PMI start to notice how quickly litter builds up in the same places each day and what types of things people toss. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Share My ActionsIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Christopher Selin 7/30/2019 9:12 PMIt’s the easiest way to share my passions with the most people who might care 🙂 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel SmartHow can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?
Christopher Selin 7/11/2019 5:12 PMI just did an audit of single use items I use on a weekly basis and looked into replacing them, such as bamboo cutlery and metal straws. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Watch a DocumentaryWhich documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?
Christopher Selin 7/10/2019 3:23 PMMinimalism. I thought it was interesting and nice to see the Minimalists following grow over time. Made me think of Marie Kondo's Tidying Up. I'm impressed that one of the "minimalists" had a family with 6 kids. One thing that's interesting is that I just moved to an apartment with more space and when they are talking about all the "things" they "must" have to fill a house, he was basically listing all of the stuff we JUST bought 😬
