Personal Care
See the Green
I will properly recycle used contact lenses and packaging.
Food
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Pets
Pet Waste
I will spend 5 minutes learning how to compost pet waste at home or research pet waste composting services available in my area.
Personal Care
Just Say No
I will avoid buying toxic plastics, including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl.
Lifestyle

Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Create Your Own Action
Compostable Diapers
I'll work with a local compost service and other parents of young children to build momentum toward starting a compostable diaper service in our area. I'll spend at least 60 minutes on phone calls, emails, and social media posts to support and advocate for this project.
Participant Feed

Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Anna Jefferson 7/24/2019 6:25 AMI'm traveling today and didn't do well with prep that would help me avoid single use plastics. I was on another trip until yesterday afternoon and left very early this morning. This has reinforced to me the trade-offs in our current systems between convenience and environmental impact. It's disheartening to be committed to reducing my environmental impact, including of plastics, and not be able to keep it up when life gets busy. (I did bring my reusable water bottle and tea mug, so it's not as bad as it could be, but I forgot utensils and had to get my airport breakfast to go.) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Pearly WhitesCurrently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?
Anna Jefferson 7/18/2019 4:40 PMI talked to my dental hygienist about plastic free options and she said you don’t even really need toothpaste to brush! The most important thing it does is act as a medium to get fluoride back into your teeth. But she didn’t have a great solution for how to get fluoride plastic free and I haven’t found one yet either, so I’m still working on this. -
Anna Jefferson 7/16/2019 11:10 AMI still find groceries a challenging area for further reducing my plastic use. I made a lot of headway by buying reusable produce bags and I buy what I can in bulk at my coop, using my own glass jars. I also eat very little processed food. However, there are some foods, like sandwich bread, that I don't have the time to make myself, and some ingredients and specialty items where I haven't found plastic-free alternatives. How do other folks deal with it when you hit a plateau along the way?-
Eric Friedman 7/17/2019 6:00 AMYeah, we just started using re-usable produce bags at the supermarket, and I'm just now starting to notice what other food we regularly buy and how much plastic or cardboard packaging they use. I guess we can start with purchasing alternatives with less packaging where they exist -- does your supermarket have a bakery and fresh-made bread? I know ours sells their bread in plastic packaging too, but maybe we can get to know the bakery staff and get our bread in reusable bags.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Anna Jefferson 7/13/2019 11:27 AMI have been buying many fewer clothes overall in the last few years, so I haven’t been buying during July. Other ways I’ve been trying to reduce the environmental impact of my clothing purchases by buying secondhand. It’s also a priority now for me to buy natural fibers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPets Pet WasteBy composting your pet waste, you are turning waste into nutrients to feed the soil. In what other ways can you turn waste into a resource in your life?
Anna Jefferson 7/08/2019 3:21 AMUnfortunately there are no current pet waste compost services in my area but there is a compost service that is interested in adding this. I currently compost for my home garden and take additional items (cooked foods, grains, industrial compostable containers) to an industrial compost drop-off in my community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel ToiletriesWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel SmartHow can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?
Anna Jefferson 7/08/2019 3:17 AMPacked our own water bottles, reusable grocery bag—one that collapses very small into its own carrying bag—and utensils for my toddler. We were less successful at using our own straws I brought b/c I didn’t know when our drinks would have them and I forgot the Spanish word for straw and adult utensils, although I brought them.
