Lifestyle Buy Only What I Need
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

I notice that very few of my intended purchases have been for health and safety. I will apply this rule to all my intended purchases from now on. It will e interesting to see the effect of this change over the next few weeks!

SOLID SHAMPOO ... I found a packaging-free shampoo bar by HumanKind, and asked my local healthfood store to stock it for me. According to Humankind, a single change to my morning routine canshape our planet's future. In one year, eliminating shampoo packaging will eliminate 5 lbs of single use plastic waste from landfills."

Lots of plastic bottles in soap and shampoo products. Let's see if the local health food market has these products as unwrapped bars... be back soon with  more info...

On the first day of the challenge I found that I was automatically accepting plastic without thinking. Oh no! By the third day with my reminder bracelet, I was more mindful. As extra insurance, when I reach for my wallet, I have to get past the folded up totebag in my purse as well. Success! At one store I refused the plastic bag and also the item packaging and asked the store to offer bulk option.

I need more reminders. So my reusable containers, tote bags and litter gear are now handy in the front seat of the car. I also am going to wear a certain bracelet to remind me to proactively refuse straws  at restaurants.

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

I take responsibility for the sidewalk and the gutters in front of my house because I belong to that place and care about it, and I care about the people who come to my house. There is nothing unusual about that. Yesterday, I put a pair of work gloves and a reusable trash bag in my tote so that when I see litter I can clean it up safely. Going to the library, I noticed a paper cup and other litter at the entrance. I picked up the litter and realized that I was restoring the entrance as a pleasing experience for the next person to come along. This became an act of courtesy for an unknown person, and I enjoyed the memory of that act all day.
