    Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

It makes you stop to appreciate your community more and how different it looks clean vs with litter scattered around. Nature looks and feels better when not interrupted by humans and our trash!

I have started looking into keeping a container or two in the car to use instead of to go boxes. Unless the restaurant packages the food for you, I don't think anyone will care what container you use!

Lifestyle Buy Only What I Need
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

"Health and Safety" are really basic and don't require too many unplanned expenditures. This definitely makes me think about long term purchases and how much keeping this guideline in mind could save!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I think that the plastic is supposed to protect the consumer, like the plastic seals that now have to cover ice cream containers. I know that some products come unpackaged already which makes me wonder either 1) are these less safe to eat because of of what they are exposed to between where they are grown and the consumer's table or 2) if they are just as safe, why do we still have packaged produce? If the plastic isn't there to protect the consumer, then it doesn't seem to have a much purpose for the consumer.

Last night I said no to the plasticware that usually comes with the drink I was ordering but I chickened out when it came to asking for no lid! It's strange where people (including me) draw the line between their green choice vs. not wanting to inconvenience people. But, I did feel that that was a step in the right direction!

Does anyone else get weird looks when they say no to straws at a restaurant? Hopefully one day that will be the norm!

I find it really frustrating when I see plastic bottles in the trash, which is right beside the recycling bin. If convenience isn't a factor in whether or not a person makes a good choice, what is?

I've been digging them out of the trash and putting them in recycling in the Butterfly House. The receptacles are practically right next to each other! We need to have some plastic awareness exhibit right when visitors come in to make them more aware!

Sometimes I feel really overwhelmed by all the waste in the world but I just have to remember that all I can do is my part!
