My bar soap is SO much cheaper, just as luxurious, and takes up less space in my shower :) Plus the benefit of buying a locally made soap is an added bonus!

    Lifestyle Homemade Cleaners
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

I actually haven't actually made my own cleaning product other than vinegar water. I a finding it difficult to fine the time to go out and purchase the materials I need. But I vow to do it at some point, it may not be during the month of July. And that is fine, because all the these we challenged ourselves for July should carry over into our normal routines.

    Food Visit the Butcher
How has using your own containers impacted the quality of the food you receive? Does this give you more awareness of where your food comes from as opposed to just grabbing a package of mystery origin cheese/meat?

I brought my own reusable container to Fresh Market and asked if they can slice 10 slices of provolone cheese and place it in my container and they did, happily, with no weird faces or looks of confusion.

    Food Use Reusable Containers
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

I've found it so helpful to make me a bit more innovative when I don't even have the options of plastic bags or disposable storage as an option at home. I'm now a Grade A hoarder of glass jars which are the easiest reusable out there!

Finally had the chance to look into the recycling program for contact lens. I was impressed with the Bausch Lomb site, One by Once Recycling Program. Currently I only have on set that needs to recycled. If anyone wants to collect theirs for a while I can send a box with several to lower the carbon print of shipping them out.

    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

Years ago you could go to any grocery store and hand pick your vegetables and fruits. But I think that people became concerned with germs and bacterial and even though you can wash the items people felt more comfortable with having their food sealed in plastic. Manufactures may feel that by wrapping them in plastic will make the produce last longer and easier to ship. Therefore the plastic packaging is serving some consumers, shippers, and the stores - less mess.

Went to Life Unplastic with Amanda Waddle yesterday, it was great! Plus, got lots of inspiration to keep going and a plastic free deodorant bar to try!

I met with Commissioners Ward and Warren (separately) to get and update on the straw ban they are working on and remind them how important it is for the city to begin their waste audit and then do the strategic plan for zero waste. I also asked the all city events work towards zero waste and not use any single-use plastics. In May, just 2 months ago at Mayor Poe and Commissioner Hayes-Santos swearing in ceremony there were plastic utensils and plastic cups used!!! All city events/building need to lead the way and set the zero waste example. They agree that this needs to be done. All city buildings including city hall should begin working towards zero waste and I am also pushing for that.
