I spent most of my vacation telling my mom about the eco challenge and ways she can reduce her lasting usage and was shocked at how less eco friendly California is than Oregon

    Personal Care Pearly Whites
Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

Found an alternative in refillable glass jars, and hoping to use and advertise within my community for those of us who aren't confident in making our own.

    Food Plant a Garden
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

We are contributing to the oxygen on our planet, and having a food to table connection so we can appreciate our food and eat more nutritious food.

    Food Shop the Bulk Bins
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think Western society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

Buying bulk is teaching us to make our own food that we would otherwise buy pre-made, like granola bars, bread, and broth. I think our Western society teaches us to move fast all the time, and prevents us from slowing down enough to prepare our own food from scratch. I also think there's a perception that it's more expensive to cook from scratch.

Family Make the Change to Cloth Diapers
In what ways is diapering your child with cloth diapers better for your child, better for you, and better for the environment?

We use SO many diapers, that's a huge volume of trash across the first year or two of each child's life. They don't decompose easily, they often have chemicals, and they make it harder for our kiddos to connect pottying with being wet, which is a key aspect of potty training.

    Community Share My Actions
In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

It's important that our values show up across all platforms. I want people who interact with me in person, online, or over the phone and professionally or personally to all recognize my sustainability efforts. I want to normalize sustainable habits, and make it so that things like getting takeout in disposable containers, using plastic straws, buying plastic-wrapped vegetables, and using plastic trash bags are no longer cultural habits.

Y'all, this has been top of mind throughout the month, and I just have not made the time in my work days to post check ins. That said, my family and I have been avoiding plastic at the grocery store, replacing our disposables with reusables, and are in the process of moving out of our house to start building a tiny house (with reclaimed materials and way fewer possessions!) My biggest hurdle remains getting stressed during the work day and reaching for convenience items - snacks in plastic packaging, for example. I also have not yet set up a diaper service, and have defaulted back to disposable diapers during this moving transition. So inspired by my fellow Rubys and looking forward to keeping this top of mind as we move forward. Keep an ear out for prize announcements to celebrate your participation!

In the spirit of getting rid of plastic straws I brought reusable straw to leave in our community kitchen to let others have as well.

I forgot my brush kit for my straw today and submitted for Ruby to purchase reusable straw brushes and baby bottle brushes so we can clean out reusable utensils at the pearl.

I invited 3 people from work to try to include more people to reduce plastic but no takers and the cup I bought Andrew got thrown away. well we win some and then we reduce plastic some.
