This has been an eye opening experience. Plastic is everywhere! But this has definitely raised my awareness to use less.

I now buy ice cream at the local ice cream shops more sustainably.  I encourage you to bring your own reusable plastic or bamboo spoons, a container, a cloth napkin.  Some establishments agreed to fill my own personal container, but at most I have to buy ice cream on a cone, then put it in the container, use my own spoons and napkins.  The ice cream shop employees (usually young people) and owners seem to be very happy to see me purchasing like this.  Sends a good positive message that we can all do better.

I found it to be very difficult to be plastic free in my food purchasing during the month of July.  It seemed many of the foods I buy on a regular basis are packaged in plastic, even when they are purchased at the local farmer's markets and almost all organic.  Very frustrating.  I did make my own hummus and put all of it in small glass containers, but that takes time I do not always have.  This gave me more resolve to help get the Bethlehem Food Co-op opened here in Bethlehem, PA.  We have the power to give our shoppers a better opportunity to buy products in reusable containers and with less plastic.

I bought my family all reusable straws and they love them! We all used them when we went out to eat this week.
