Brandeis Staff Action Team on Climate Change Feed

BACK TO TEAM PAGE

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Takeout Pro
How could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?

I called ahead to the restaurant to see if it would be okay. They were much nicer than expected- they explained to me that they save money on packaging, so it was a win win!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I started going to Wegmans and bringing my own containers for bulk items like trail mix or oatmeal- rather than buying prepackaged from Stop & Stop or Hannafords. The dry goods were also much easier to stack in my pantry!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Toiletries
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

I have sensitive skin, so I can refill containers with my preferred soaps/shampoos/etc instead of trying to find fragrance free travel sized containers. I will continue to do this!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Make Your Own
How do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?

I learned to make my own yogurt using a pressure cooker! It is actually really easy using a starter, and I can use glass reusable containers instead of buying prepacked plastic containers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Smart
How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

I brought a reusable water bottle on the plane rather than buying a water bottle at the airport.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I was able to bring a reusable container of muffins and fruit on the plane with no hassle!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Personal Care That Was a Close Shave
What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

Dollar shave club is much cheaper than buying disposable razors!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

I carry around my own reusable straw in my purse to use if I want to get a drink on the go. I will sometimes bring an extra to share with a friend and will wash it myself to make it easier for others to avoid disposables.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Containers
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

Reuse every container you can for storage, such as using a yogurt container to store oatmeal, to make the most of single-use plastics.
