Esther's actions
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own airplane snacks and eat at local restaurants to avoid take-out containers.
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors. Why not try using hair conditioner instead of shaving foam for that baby smooth feel?
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA approved reusable quart sized bag.
Lifestyle
Travel Smart
If traveling, I will bring my own plastic free items (water bottle, grocery bags, collapsible food containers, utensils, straws, etc.) with me.
Food
Buy Unpackaged Produce
I will purchase produce items without plastic packaging.
Food
Takeout Pro
I will use my own containers when ordering takeout.
Food
Make Your Own
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Food
Use Reusable Containers
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Takeout ProHow could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?
Esther Brandon 7/23/2019 2:34 PMI called ahead to the restaurant to see if it would be okay. They were much nicer than expected- they explained to me that they save money on packaging, so it was a win win! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy Unpackaged ProduceWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Esther Brandon 7/23/2019 2:31 PMI started going to Wegmans and bringing my own containers for bulk items like trail mix or oatmeal- rather than buying prepackaged from Stop & Stop or Hannafords. The dry goods were also much easier to stack in my pantry! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel ToiletriesWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Esther Brandon 7/10/2019 12:00 PMI have sensitive skin, so I can refill containers with my preferred soaps/shampoos/etc instead of trying to find fragrance free travel sized containers. I will continue to do this! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Make Your OwnHow do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?
Esther Brandon 7/10/2019 11:58 AMI learned to make my own yogurt using a pressure cooker! It is actually really easy using a starter, and I can use glass reusable containers instead of buying prepacked plastic containers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel SmartHow can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?
Esther Brandon 7/09/2019 12:45 PMI brought a reusable water bottle on the plane rather than buying a water bottle at the airport. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel EatingWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Esther Brandon 7/09/2019 12:44 PMI was able to bring a reusable container of muffins and fruit on the plane with no hassle! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care That Was a Close ShaveWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Esther Brandon 7/09/2019 12:34 PMI carry around my own reusable straw in my purse to use if I want to get a drink on the go. I will sometimes bring an extra to share with a friend and will wash it myself to make it easier for others to avoid disposables. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable ContainersHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Esther Brandon 7/09/2019 12:32 PMReuse every container you can for storage, such as using a yogurt container to store oatmeal, to make the most of single-use plastics.
