Re-usable Rain Barrel
This is a one time goal. I have been wanting to make a rain barrel for a while now and I was able to buy a 55 gallon plastic drum that would have gone into the trash otherwise. I am in the process of converting it to a rain barrel and then I will be able to use the rain runoff water to water my plants and garden.

Jennifer Trevis 7/22/2019 12:50 PMI have been bad about ordering iced coffee in the mornings and they come in a plastic cup with a plastic lid (I always just use my reusable straw). Since this challenge started I started ordering just a regular coffee (that does not come in a plastic cup) instead so that I am not getting as much plastic. While the lid is still plastic I have been able to at least cut back my plastic use a little and am on my way to get better about just making coffee at home/work. -
Jennifer Trevis 7/16/2019 1:53 PMI recently installed a paver patio in my back yard and all the sand and paver base I had to use was in plastic bags. SO WASTEFUL! I felt very bad about it but I plan on saving the bags that I can and at least get one more use out of them like small trashcan liners and animal waste bags at home. In the future I may look into seeing if they can just dump different load sizes instead of them having to come in bags (however I will most likely never be installing a paver patio again 😳).-
Chevy Griffin 7/17/2019 1:51 PMI commend you for posting this as you felt bad about the situation. Posting brings awareness about the way our purchases are packaged and what you can do in the future as an alternative or what you can do to make the best of the situation. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Jennifer Trevis 7/16/2019 1:49 PMI learned that it can be very easy to make my own cleaning products. Also, when I make my one I realized that I have less waste. It also seemed to save me some money. I am going to try and continue to make cleaning products more often. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?
Jennifer Trevis 7/12/2019 11:34 AMI think if a restaurant does not let you use your own containers at first it would be a good time to talk to the waiter/waitress about the importance of using less plastic waste (and just in general). maybe even email/talk to manager later on and explain why it is important they look to change their policy. There have been times when I have forgotten my own containers and had to get some plastic ones. They kept asking if I wanted a plastic bag to put the containers in but I kept saying no and why it is important. I wasn't able to not use plastic that day but at least I was able to use less by not getting the plastic bag to put the containers in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Jennifer Trevis 7/09/2019 8:07 AMI am constantly picking up trash around the zoo and even when I am not at work. Sometimes my family thinks I am crazy but some of them seem to be catching on to helping keep the environment clean. -
Jennifer Trevis 7/08/2019 10:49 AMI was on a boat this past weekend and I realized that it seems harder to use less plastic when on there (due to convenience) but I was able to convince my parents to use paper straws and reduce the amount of plastic water bottles they buy/use for the boat. They are also using less plastic cups and have more reusable ones. I did notice they boat dock has recycling there and I have convinced them to take the time to separate out their trash into the respective recycling bins. Overall I am doing well this month but I know there are still areas I am working to improve on.-
joy kotheimer 7/09/2019 7:32 AMNice work! It’s difficult to change habits especially when ease of use is involved. But you taking the time to talk about it is exactly how change starts! 🙌💙💚

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Jennifer Trevis 7/08/2019 10:40 AMI love having a garden with fresh vegetables that I know exactly where they came from and I know that plastic was not used to store or transport them. I am able to share what I grow with family and friends. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Jennifer Trevis 7/08/2019 10:38 AMSo many people are on social media now that just making a simple post on Facebook can reach a lot of people. I feel that posts I have made in the past have gotten people talking and asking questions about what they can do better to help the environment. I have even seen people share my posts and then it reaches even more people.
