Ryan's actions
Create Your Own Action
Shampoo Bars
My goal is to completely switch over to shampoo bars. We still have shampoo in a bottle, but the goal is to switch to bars. I picked because I feel this is a big part of our plastic consumption
Personal Care
Lather Up
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, and conditions with either a bar or refillable option.
Family
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 5 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own airplane snacks and eat at local restaurants to avoid take-out containers.
Community
Estimate Your Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
I will visit rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.

Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden in my home, workplace, or community garden
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 10 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Personal Care
Just Say No
I will avoid buying toxic plastics, including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl.

I will prepare 3 meal(s) at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Takeout Pro
I will use my own containers when ordering takeout.

Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors. Why not try using hair conditioner instead of shaving foam for that baby smooth feel?

Ryan Otsuka 7/25/2019 10:42 PMApparently Beijing Subways allow travelers to use plastic bottles as payment to encourage recycling. It seems like a pretty good idea. What do you think?-
Rebecca Rix 7/26/2019 12:24 AMBrilliant!

1. There is a type of plastic made from milk
2. There is a fungus that actually eats plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Thoughtful ToysDoes your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?
Ryan Otsuka 7/21/2019 6:54 PMSo I don't have a child, but I tried to make the toys anyway. I'm not certain how children will accept. All I know so far is the fact that I'm saving the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Lather UpWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Ryan Otsuka 7/20/2019 8:49 PMEconomic wise, shampoo bars could potentially be more expensive depending on how much of it just melts away. Personally, I find it really cool to just stick a block of soap in my hair. I find that it just feels better if that makes any sense. It could just be he fact that I'm saving the environment. Who knows?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel EatingWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Ryan Otsuka 7/20/2019 8:44 PMIt was very easy to just bring our own food. Plus, we saved money on all the expensive food you find in airports and other places. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care That Was a Close ShaveWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Ryan Otsuka 7/20/2019 8:24 PMDisposable razors are most likely some marketing plan to make more money since people need to buy more of it. This concept is applicable to many actions that large corporations take while not considering the environmental impact. Steal razors are reusable and honestly could be cheaper. Nothing about my life has changed because of it and I feel disposable razors just should not be a thing

Ryan Otsuka 7/18/2019 8:06 PMFound some plastic fun facts and here is one I found interesting
In 2002, only 360 million plastic bottles were recycled out of 9.1 billion plastic bottles disposed -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant a GardenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Ryan Otsuka 7/15/2019 4:52 PMBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, growing a garden benefits me knowing that I won't be buy fruits like blueberries or strawberries that come in a plastic container. It is already good that most fresh produce does not come in plastic bags, but for some reason, some still come in plastic. Growing a garden prevents this all. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Glass Bottle BabyHow can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself and your family? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?
Ryan Otsuka 7/15/2019 4:49 PMA big part of encouraging sustainable living I feel is spreading the word. No one is going to know about how bad plastic is unless you tell them and use evidence to back it up. Spreading knowledge is a huge crucial step and is necessary to work towards broader change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Estimate Your Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutralWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Ryan Otsuka 7/14/2019 11:38 AMI found tons of small changes I could make to decrease my plastic use including not using cotton swabs or medicine bottles. I never even thought of the fact these have plastic in them. It is time to make a change-
Donna Chinn 7/15/2019 8:48 AMThere are still brands of cotton swabs that are plastic free. I believe the original Q-tip brand is paper & cotton.
