Apparently Beijing Subways allow travelers to use plastic bottles as payment to encourage recycling. It seems like a pretty good idea. What do you think?

Some new things I learned today

    1. There is a type of plastic made from milk
    2. There is a fungus that actually eats plastic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family Thoughtful Toys
Does your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?

    Ryan Otsuka's avatar
    Ryan Otsuka 7/21/2019 6:54 PM
So I don't have a child, but I tried to make the toys anyway. I'm not certain how children will accept. All I know so far is the fact that I'm saving the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care Lather Up
What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Ryan Otsuka's avatar
    Ryan Otsuka 7/20/2019 8:49 PM
Economic wise, shampoo bars could potentially be more expensive depending on how much of it just melts away. Personally, I find it really cool to just stick a block of soap in my hair. I find that it just feels better if that makes any sense. It could just be he fact that I'm saving the environment. Who knows?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

    Ryan Otsuka's avatar

It was very easy to just bring our own food. Plus, we saved money on all the expensive food you find in airports and other places.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Personal Care That Was a Close Shave
What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

    Ryan Otsuka's avatar
    Ryan Otsuka 7/20/2019 8:24 PM
Disposable razors are most likely some marketing plan to make more money since people need to buy more of it. This concept is applicable to many actions that large corporations take while not considering the environmental impact. Steal razors are reusable and honestly could be cheaper. Nothing about my life has changed because of it and I feel disposable razors just should not be a thing

Found some plastic fun facts and here is one I found interesting

In 2002, only 360 million plastic bottles were recycled out of 9.1 billion plastic bottles disposed
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant a Garden
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

    Ryan Otsuka's avatar
    Ryan Otsuka 7/15/2019 4:52 PM
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, growing a garden benefits me knowing that I won't be buy fruits like blueberries or strawberries that come in a plastic container. It is already good that most fresh produce does not come in plastic bags, but for some reason, some still come in plastic. Growing a garden prevents this all.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family Glass Bottle Baby
How can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself and your family? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?

    Ryan Otsuka's avatar
    Ryan Otsuka 7/15/2019 4:49 PM
A big part of encouraging sustainable living I feel is spreading the word. No one is going to know about how bad plastic is unless you tell them and use evidence to back it up. Spreading knowledge is a huge crucial step and is necessary to work towards broader change.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I found tons of small changes I could make to decrease my plastic use including not using cotton swabs or medicine bottles. I never even thought of the fact these have plastic in them. It is time to make a change

There are still brands of cotton swabs that are plastic free.  I believe the original Q-tip brand is paper & cotton.
