Mary Lou's actions
Food
Buy Unpackaged Produce
I will purchase produce items without plastic packaging.
Food
Use Reusable Containers
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Family
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 5 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Community
Write Letters or Emails
I will write 5 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

That Was a Close Shave

Community
Volunteer in my Community

Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Personal Care
Pretty oh so Pretty
I will purchase beauty products that are packaged in sustainable packaging.
Personal Care
Fresh as a Daisy
I will use deodorant either from a bar or a jar or I will make my own.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will purchase toothpaste in an aluminum tube or in a glass jar or make my own!
Create Your Own Action
Handing out Skip the Straw cards
I plan to hand out at least 3 cards per week. It creates an opportunity to talk about the single use plastic problem.

Mary Lou Nicholson 7/31/2019 2:13 PMThis was a terrific challenge.
I’m excited to have more locally made, eco friendly products available. Glorias in Fairhaven has metal straws for sale. -
Mary Lou Nicholson 7/29/2019 4:30 AMI always have to tell the host or hostess at restaurants or take out places immediately that I don’t want a straw, plastic utensils and plastic bag.
When ordering over the phone, I let them know I don’t want any single use plastic.
My favorite glass straw is in the picture. -
Mary Lou Nicholson 7/25/2019 1:45 PMI visited Greenline Apothecary on Main Street near Branch Ave in Providence. If you are looking for shampoo bars, they have quite the variety!!!!
They have a good selection of eco friendly products. -
Mary Lou Nicholson 7/24/2019 6:40 PMI always have reusable bowls, plates, utensils, straws and water bottles for me and the kids. We either use silicone or cloth bags for snacks. I also keep bento boxes in a reusable bag for leftovers in restaurants.
