REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Watch a DocumentaryWhich documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?
Whitney McClees 7/31/2019 8:34 AMI chose to watch Minimalism. It's amazing to me how much stuff we go through in our daily lives. The documentary definitely prompted me to be more conscious of what I'm buying, how it's made, where it's coming from, and whether or not I truly need it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Whitney McClees 7/16/2019 9:21 AMNatural fibers don't break down in a way that sends loads of plastic microfibers into the ocean to soak up toxins and end up as part of the food web, eventually making their way back to us. I will definitely be making a more concerted effort to buy clothing that isn't plastic-based. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Estimate Your Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutralWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Whitney McClees 7/11/2019 6:13 AMI found the website interesting as a way to think about my plastic consumption, but they assumed that many of the staples (like toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.) that I have are plastic. There was no way to change those options and customize by listing items that are usually plastic that I've already switched out. That said, I could definitely reduce my plastic consumption by limiting the food/household items that I buy that come with plastic packaging. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Whitney McClees 7/07/2019 5:49 AMIt allows me the opportunity to interact with my community and get an idea of what their thoughts are and what the best ways are to involve the wider community in sustainability initiatives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Pearly WhitesCurrently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?
Whitney McClees 7/03/2019 6:20 AMI can avoid buying products that are predominantly plastic. I can advocate for local organizations to get involved with more public outreach to help reduce our community plastic consumption.-
June Cruz 7/04/2019 5:31 AMI noticed the toothpaste thing a small well and I use Terracycle to recycle them. I did see you were trying a new toothpaste brand though, think I'll look into it as well. Could you share your opinion on it?

Whitney McClees 7/03/2019 6:19 AMWe're going to try Bite Toothpaste Bits to try to avoid the plastic packaging that regular toothpaste comes in! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusables at WorkIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Whitney McClees 7/02/2019 3:09 PMI bring my own bamboo utensils to work. I can advocate for reducing waste at work events and bring my own dishes and utensils to work events and encourage people to join me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Minimize PackagingWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Whitney McClees 7/01/2019 9:18 AMThe amount of packaging that food comes in is a little nuts. Individually wrapped chicken breasts in a larger plastic bag. Plastic wrap around plastic bottles instead of boxes. Packaged produce instead of carrying loose items. It's hard to avoid packaging altogether when there isn't a bulk food option or an option to bring your own containers. Hmm... maybe I'll look into that this month. Bringing my own containers for loose items at the grocery store. -
Whitney McClees 6/27/2019 6:42 AMRemembered my reusable mug for work today! Making good habits. -
Whitney McClees 6/24/2019 7:55 AMUsing this last week before Plastic Free July starts to do my research on the best ways to succeed and form new habits!
