Karin's actions
Create Your Own Action
Choose not to have children
If one does not feel strongly about having children, there should be no societal pressure to do so. We can encourage those who do not wish to have children and recognize this choice as a contribution to the planet.
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 4 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Food
Skip the Straw
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Family
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and tupperware-like containers in my children's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Family
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 3 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Plastic Free Lunch BoxesMost of us know that the "3 R's" are reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling is most heavily emphasized in modern Western culture. How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Karin Kiessling 7/31/2019 12:12 PMWhile it was easy to find reusable utensils and containers for lunch, it's more challenging to find goods that don't come in plastic containers at the grocery store. I can't wait for the day inventors like Marshall Medoff can market plant cellulose (the most abundant biological material on earth) into strong but biodegradable plastic and environmentally friendly fuel. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Karin Kiessling 7/16/2019 1:15 PMPlenty of people have stopped me at movie houses as they notice I pull out my stainless steel straw and ask me where I purchased it. Makes for a fun and educational discussion point. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Karin Kiessling 7/16/2019 1:14 PMI've purchased sets of reusable cutlery for friends birthdays this year and they love them! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Swap the SnacksHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
