    Food Visit the Butcher
How has using your own containers impacted the quality of the food you receive? Does this give you more awareness of where your food comes from as opposed to just grabbing a package of mystery origin cheese/meat?

Honestly, I still don't really look at the origin of my food when it comes to cheese, though learning about Seafood watch makes me quite aware of buying sustainable seafood. As far as meat/beef, I try and look for grass fed but am not too picky (I usually look for sales). Working in an environmental field and studying it in school I have been fairly aware that food doesn't just grow in grocery stores and as I have more money and become more aware of the environmental issues surrounding products I do my best to adjust and buy earth friendly products.

As far as quality, I didn't notice a difference but that is probably because I almost never buy steak. I didn't see an option for cuts of chicken which is usually my meat of choice but going to the counter means I can be more adventurous. I did find it funny that they automatically wrap the meat in plastic at the counter so you have to ask them to use more butcher paper.

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

I totally anticipated sharing my journey more on social media. I think because I didn't (couldn't) link my account to my Facebook I was less motivated. However, I follow some of my previous coordinators and their plastic free/trash free lifestyles are really inspiring. Watching them go through their journey reminds me that going plastic free is a not easy and struggling is just part of the journey. I hope to keep continuing to live as plastic free as I can and share my progress with my social media.

    Food Shop the Bulk Bins
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think Western society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

I remember at least 12 years ago, my dad would buy bulk sweets from the grocery store and one time we went to buy chocolate covered peanuts. He used the scoop to dig down a ways and out popped quite a few flies. I think that experience influenced my shopping ways but now I use Sprouts bulk sections and the quality is the same as buying pre-packaged. It's an added bonus that i can just buy what I need so things don't go bad before I can use them. I just wish they had more options! Options like cereal since it comes in a plastic bag would be great, as well as pretzels or crackers. Hopefully as more people buy bulk, I can continue to use less plastic!

The more we do it, the more they will respond I’m sure. If you don’t find what you want, tell an employee and request they try to stock it. No harm in planting a seed!

That would indeed change the way you shop.  Kudos for getting over it and going back to bulk shopping.

The teen volunteers at the Zoo want to bring back face painting so I have been receiving supplies for the past few days. Today I got a shipment of face paint and I am so distraught over the amount of plastic used :( The paints were wrapped in groups of 4, so each group was wrapped together in 2 feet of plastic wrap, then several feet of bubble wrap, then wrapped in plastic wrap again (this time it was wrapped in like 12 feet of plastic wrap). That was an INCREDIBLE amount of plastic for 10 face paints and I definitely want to write the company and ask them to rework their shipping process. Anyone have some tips/pre-made letters I could look at?

Nightmare!! For your letter, I’d say just copy and paste what you’ve written here. That says it beautifully.

I think one of the best purchases I made for the eco-challenge was my two reusable bamboo cutlery sets; they came with a fork, spoon, knife, 2 straws, and a cleaner, all in a cloth pouch. I attached a carabiner to each pouch so they can be clipped to my purse, water bottle or even my belt loop. It makes bringing silverware with me such much easier and convenient because I don't have to think about it; it's already attached to my bag! Cleaning the silverware has been my biggest hurdle -- I either don't clean it enough or forget to pull the silverware out of the dishwasher. I have found that a quick rinse in sink is great when I don't have time to wash everything. This is what I did when I took my silverware to an amusement park. I was able to rinse my cutlery between meals and not use plastic silverware at all!

I find it weird that using deodorant from a jar is a one-time challenge instead of a daily challenge (I guess you only have to buy it once in a month?) but I'm surprised my deodorant is working as well as it is. I personally feel like I am quite smelly and have been since I was a kid. Years of theater and unwashed costumes meant I become really hyper-aware of what I smelled like and sought out several types of antiperspirants (I even resorted to clinical strength for a bit). Using a natural deodorant is actually working quite well. I haven't found myself to be overly sweaty or stinky; I even bought a second jar to put in my work desk fearing the worst yet I have not had to use it (even in the Arizona heat!). I definitely plan on sticking with natural deodorant from now on, though I might look for baking soda free deodorants (I tend to break out). Anyone have any brands that they love??

Being a part of this plastics challenge has made me so much more aware of the plastics I use. For example, I have a hard time making myself breakfast and often find myself stopping by dunkin donuts for a coffee and bagel. Which means that I am using 4 or 5 single use plastic cups some weeks. Yes, the cups can be recycled (and often times I do recycle them) but it is much better to refuse plastics in the first place. With this Friday being payday, I plan on purchasing my own reusable tumbler to bring with me when getting coffee.

Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

There is a lot of research right now on aluminum antiperspirants and diseases such as breast cancer and Alzheimer's. In reading a few articles, both mention that there are studies saying there is a definitive link between the two as well as studies saying there is no link at all. I honestly find it hard to tell which information is accurate since many research opportunities are funded by organizations that have an investment in the research producing a certain outcome.

However, I did read about how the body becomes dependent on the aluminum in antiperspirants, which makes the body foster more odor causing bacteria when antiperspirants are not used. I found this to be true when I switched to a natural deodorant. The first few days were ROUGH! I smelled incredibly bad (it didn't helped that I was in Florida and sweating like crazy) and had to return to my hotel to wash under my arms, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. Now that I've been using the deodorant for about a week, I do not smell nearly as bad and my sweating doesn't seems as bad as well.

Overall, I'm happy with the switch (the company I use will also send me a return label so I can send the glass jars back to be sanitized and reused) and will continue to use it barring I don't have any skin reactions (this happened the first time I made my own deodorant).

    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

    Sierra Horsey's avatar
    Sierra Horsey 7/06/2019 10:30 AM
I think one of best ways to advocate is to lead by example. I purchased bamboo cutlery and metal straws that I keep in a cloth pouch that clips to my purse or water bottle. It is quite noticeable so several people with as me what the pouch is for or notice me with using bamboo cutlery. I then explain the need to reduce single use plastics and tell them about the plastic free eco challenge happening.

A lot of restaurants use plastic cutlery out of convenience and cheap costs and we as society are always in a hurry -- getting our food to go and using disposable cutlery -- which encourages businesses. Taking the time to dine-in as well as bringing our own cutlery would encourage businesses to ditch the plastic as they will only supply disposable cutlery if there is a demand for it.

What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

In preparation for my trip, I purchased reusable containers for my toiletries. I have used bar soap for 2 years now so bringing a bar with me was an easy adjustment. The hotel I stayed at had a bar of soap wrapped in a cardboard box which I was excited to see, however, upon opening the box, the soap was wrapped in plastic so I didn't use it. For my other toiletries, I brought my powdered tooth paste, lotion, deodorant, and various hair products. This allowed me to keep my usual hair and skin routine without having to learn the products provided by the hotel. I will definitely be bringing my products with me more often.
