Sally Sherman 7/31/2019 11:56 AMCongratulations to everyone who made it through the month! Each thing that each of us learned and each bit of influence we may have had on someone else ALL contributes to moving us forward to a plastic-free, minimal waste, sustainable world. Lets keep it up! 🌎 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Homemade CleanersWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Sally Sherman 7/31/2019 11:25 AMWhite vinegar is the Queen of cleaning ingredients! I wonder if using it here in the alkaline desert makes it even more effective. -

Sally Sherman 7/31/2019 10:57 AMHaving squeezed the very last shot out of my toothpaste tube, I have now made a batch of tooth powder, principally involving baking soda and salt. It tastes pretty salty, so I may want to add some refreshing flavor such as peppermint oil, but for now, it’s doing the job. I just can’t part with my electric toothbrush, though, and so far I haven’t found any bamboo replacement heads. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Pearly WhitesCurrently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel SmartHow can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?
Sally Sherman 7/27/2019 2:09 PMTraveling with my daughter, we were both very much on board. We stayed at Airbnbs, prepared all our own meals, and traveled with a cooler. It was fun and rewarding, and the food was better, too! -
Sally Sherman 7/27/2019 12:56 PMWe had some repair work done on our car. When the folks asked if we’d like some water, we declined, telling them about the challenge and how many water bottles end up in the oceans, etc. They were so interested, and one of them said she was going to seriously try to eliminate single-use plastic herself. They all said they’d be more aware. -
Sally Sherman 7/26/2019 3:50 PMI think I’m starting to hyperventilate a little bit as we approach the end of the month! This has been—IS— such a worthwhile challenge, and there are so many good ideas. Bit of an embarrassing admission: I just discovered, at the bottom of my DASHBOARD, the section called “RESOURCES FOR YOUR CHALLENGE.” If you haven’t checked that out, do it. There are many, many useful tips and how-to bits, including in the comments section. I hope all the news at this website doesn’t disappear on Aug 1! -
Sally Sherman 7/26/2019 1:56 PMThis has been a great month for personal awareness and also for being open and obvious about what I’m doing and why. The more I and others avoid plastic in our own ways, the more mainstream and not “weird” it becomes in the public eye. I think that makes people more willing to do it themselves. -
Sally Sherman 7/25/2019 10:42 AMBusinesses are paying attention! I’m running across more and more ads (generally pretty funny, too!) for plastic-free zero-waste products from soaps & cleaners to toilet paper to produce bags to food bowl covers. Looks like the shift away from plastic is going to sweep like the campaign to stop plastic straws. This is encouraging!!
