Shaianne Homann 7/05/2019 7:48 AMI move into an apartment tomorrow in Long Beach I suspect that there's going to be a lot of single use plastics in the furniture packaging, is there a way to recycle or certain things I can look out for to know that I can send something to recycling versus the landfill? -
Shaianne Homann 7/04/2019 10:10 PMA little discussion thread: Sustainability isn't the most accessible/feasible things for people at points in their lives financially, time-wise, circumstance wise, etc. What are some resources or tips for either cheap, time sensitive, convenient (?) Sustainable practices (I'm not the best with words, but I hope this made sense)-
Adele Philippides 7/05/2019 6:51 AMI agree... so much sustainability requires extra time and money. The one thing that does not is evaluating our choices and not buy excess. Think of all the stupid things that are for sale that often don't even do what they are purported to do. For instance, I had an experience with a plastic pineapple cutter.. it was supposed to spiral cut the pineapple. For the record, I did not buy it. :) but it didn't cut the pineapple at all, and it was so cheap that it wasn't worth driving back to the store for a return. All this stuff gets created and the manufacturers reap the money, and they never hear the complaints of their products so they don't have incentive to create something that is useful. It's hard to eliminate cheap plastic products that are actually useful - everyone needs to wear shoes, and not many can buy sustainable ones. But we can eliminate the stupid stuff - decorations used once and thrown away, excess craft supplies, and all the ever-loving toys that our kids have too many of.

Shaianne Homann 7/03/2019 1:10 PMI have brought my reusable water bottle every day this week to work! Hope I can keep it up :) -
Shaianne Homann 7/01/2019 9:52 PMSunday and Monday were busy! But I'm staying true and not using single use plastic water bottles. I am also trying to look into other eco friendly options like metal straws and stuff. By the end of this challenge I hope to discover some new and affordable things I can do to be Eco Friendly -
Shaianne Homann 6/29/2019 12:18 PMBesides farmers markets, what are some ways to make sure that the products I get at a grocery store are as locally centered as possible? Ideally not transported from anywhere outside of California, is there a grocery chain that does this? - Kind of not plastic-related, but it's environment-related --
Sara Lesser 6/30/2019 4:54 PMI don't know if there are specific grocery stores like this (seems like there should be), but I know that at some grocery stores, like Ralphs, they will advertise what products are local - mostly in the produce section, so that can at least give you the option to choose more local products.

Shaianne Homann 6/29/2019 12:15 PMToday is day 1! Looking forward to start the day at the Aquarium and I plan on starting small. Today's goals are to recycle a can (that I brought for lunch) and make sure I use my Hydroflask all day to cut down on Single Use Plastic Waste. Good luck!
