Create Your Own Action
Gift Wrap w/o Plastic
I have a lot of birthdays and special events coming up in July, and they'll all require a gift. I want to challenge myself and my friends to minimize single-use plastic used in the gifts or its presentation, and show that a thoughtful gesture doesn't have to be wasteful!
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors. Why not try using hair conditioner instead of shaving foam for that baby smooth feel?
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Food
Buy Unpackaged Produce
I will purchase produce items without plastic packaging.
Food
Make Your Own
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Food
Takeout Pro
I will use my own containers when ordering takeout.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA approved reusable quart sized bag.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will purchase toothpaste in an aluminum tube or in a glass jar or make my own!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Alyssa Bjorkquist 7/19/2019 1:34 PMPicking up litter is a way to get outside and see more of my neighborhood, starting from the ground level and working up. It allows me to appreciate the little things that make me love my neighborhood and hopefully spark change through others seeing my actions (or at least the beautification after my actions). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Pearly WhitesCurrently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?
Alyssa Bjorkquist 7/12/2019 8:46 PMI just switched to Bite toothpaste! Their packaging is plastic-free and it's a glass bottle subscription. One of the best ways to start change at a business-level is through local change and word-of-mouth. Once enough people bring it up, their comments and purchasing power can start influencing change through peer pressure and cognitive dissonance. Those little conversations in the aisles are more powerful than we realize! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Takeout ProHow could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?
Alyssa Bjorkquist 7/12/2019 8:42 PMIt has been such a struggle using my own takeout containers at food establishments. When I ordered thai food yesterday, I complimented the manager on his choice to package food plastic-free. He vented his frustrated about the "plastic free hippies" and how it's a futile movement to push environmentalism since "we're all doomed anyways". I tried to explain that every little change has huge impacts, but he wasn't in a mood to hear it. Oh well. -
Alyssa Bjorkquist 7/09/2019 1:44 PMAll of the OR ladies made sure to reduce our single-use plastic consumption today! One brought her food in glass containers, I refused single-use wrappings and utensils for my burrito, and one of us patronized a sandwich place using paper wrapping. It's getting easier every day! -
Alyssa Bjorkquist 7/07/2019 3:05 PMLast night I was watching the new Spiderman movie with my boyfriend and we (along with others) applauded when we saw one of the main characters with a reusable straw. If you see that movie, look for a message about sustainable life choices and how it matters in the credits. Plastic free lifetyles are catching on thanks to the amazing changes we implement! -
Alyssa Bjorkquist 7/07/2019 3:03 PMAny tips on how you remember to bring your own reusable containers into the restaurant for take-out? I always forget and really want to make this a good habit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Discover TogetherWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Alyssa Bjorkquist 7/03/2019 1:23 PMThe aggressive rhetoric behind some plastic reduction or eco-friendly campaigns is distressing and unproductive. A good part of my day is breaking down myths and helping expose gaps in knowledge with our aquarium's clientele. I appreciate how the Plastic Free July is positive, instills habits that are sustainable, and is not blameworthy. I'm so excited to get started with these challenges!
