I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible Cup
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own collapsible cup.

I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Make Your OwnHow do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?
Joe Walter 7/26/2019 11:54 AMWe garden at home, so we like to make lots of salads with our own grown vegetables. Saves from buying them at the grocery store or farmers market. But we do try to go to a farmers market when we can to buy produce. The large grocery stores claim to buy local farmers produce but you never know, and also supporting a local farmers market may support local farms better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Joe Walter 7/26/2019 9:29 AMI try to remember my reusable shopping bags when I go to the grocery store. Sometimes I forget them, I don't keep them in the car. But then I think about the plastic produce bags, and the deli baggies (never thought about them!!) and the meat department bags sometimes needed for chicken packages that are messy. There is a lot of plastic out there to be aware of. I guess awareness is the first step, but it can be tough to reduce the usage of some of these things because they are everywhere and often looked on as "needed". -
Joe Walter 7/26/2019 9:22 AMI went to the beach last weekend and was pleased to see 2 restaurants serve drinks with paper straws. I live in the Northeast in PA and in my local area everyone serves plastic straws. So when I see paper I get really excited, and glad! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible CupGreat job on getting rid of your disposable cup habit! How does it make you feel? What's next on your list to reduce your waste?
Joe Walter 7/16/2019 2:26 PMI try to use my Yeti or other reusable mug for my coffee habit every day, rather than getting a paper, plastic or Styrofoam cup for coffee when I buy coffee out. Water as well, I take a water bottle or 2 with me when I head out. -
Joe Walter 7/02/2019 2:03 PMReally have to work on refusing those straws! My gosh, you get them everywhere. I bought a pack of reusable straws a little while back, but have to say I have not used them much ... This is my motivation to get them out and use them!!-
Courtney Groszhans 7/18/2019 5:39 PMI have made an added effort to do this too! It's hard, but once you get in the routine it becomes easier! -
Jessica Zahn 7/03/2019 1:32 PMRefusing is definitely an active choice, Joe! Another colleague and I were at a goodbye happy hour just last night and noted that you have to ask, usually more than once. Carry reusables should definitely get you on the right path! :-)
