Destinee 's actions
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Food
Skip the Straw
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible Cup
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own collapsible cup.
Personal Care
Lather Up
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, and conditions with either a bar or refillable option.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Lifestyle
Travel Smart
If traveling, I will bring my own plastic free items (water bottle, grocery bags, collapsible food containers, utensils, straws, etc.) with me.
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors. Why not try using hair conditioner instead of shaving foam for that baby smooth feel?
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden in my home, workplace, or community garden
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will purchase toothpaste in an aluminum tube or in a glass jar or make my own!
Personal Care
Just Say No
I will avoid buying toxic plastics, including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel SmartHow can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?
Destinee Strickland 7/13/2019 2:58 PMWhen I took a day trip to Seattle for an event, I packed my lunch in Tupperware and used a canvas bag to carry everything. I shared both my food and new habits with everyone. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Watch a DocumentaryWhich documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?
Destinee Strickland 7/12/2019 11:28 AMPlastic is the worst! it takes about 1000 years to decompose :'( !!! On average, 300 billion bags are used yearly. On the plus side, many states will charge a fee for plastic bags at stores. -
Destinee Strickland 7/11/2019 4:35 PMFound a new use for old pill bottles...mini first-aid kits!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Just Say NoDo some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONPets Rubber Glove Pet Hair RemovalWe know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!
Destinee Strickland 7/08/2019 8:19 AMShe is amazing, she loves to give hugs and sit on your lap (even though she is a big Pitbull), she is the sweetest dog ever!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Lather UpWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Destinee Strickland 7/05/2019 3:55 PMEconomic: saves money (on both ends) by not having to pay for packaging.
Personal: I can feel established by purchasing an item that helps to eliminate post-consumer waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care That Was a Close ShaveWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Destinee Strickland 7/05/2019 3:52 PMI just purchased a steel razor from a local, sustainable company that does not use plastic in their packaging. I am excited to try something new (and help keep plastic razors out of landfills). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible CupGreat job on getting rid of your disposable cup habit! How does it make you feel? What's next on your list to reduce your waste?
Destinee Strickland 7/05/2019 10:14 AMI feel so good about making a difference in the community. I got a travel mug/water bottle that I can use to get my daily tea.
My next mission is to eat less takeout to reduce the number of plastic containers I need to throw away.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Destinee Strickland 7/05/2019 10:02 AMI am always telling people to help save the world one straw at a time. Without even noticing it I have been telling friends and family to use stainless steel straws.
