REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
sandy spears 7/06/2019 8:03 PMClay and I volunteered at a Rummage Sale. I did 2 hours. Clay did 5 hours. 1500 volunteers. 2 million dollars raised for community projects. Folks got good items for essentially free and lots of stuff was saved from the landfill. I also got good stuff for my classroom. Win/win/win/win -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
sandy spears 7/05/2019 9:17 PMSo after watching True Cost about the impact clothing has on our environment, I decided to focus on that. I first I didn't need to buy anything for the longest time but i finally needed to get underwear and didn't want to buy used. So I Googled some brands and found Boodie at a local store so Ididn't have to ship. Got them two days ago. Boodie is made out of sustainable bamboo. It just occurred to me that a year ago we bough sheets by TEncel- made of wood in an enviornemtnal process. The sheets are fabulously soft. -
sandy spears 7/01/2019 7:19 PMSo we planted a veggie garden. We found a used book shelf falling apart someone had as a give away on the side of the road. The perimeter serves as the garden bed and it meant we didn't have to build a garden bed. The larger pots for plants can be recycled but not the little ones. The soil bags can be reused, after I rinse off as kitchen garbage can liners or to pick up after the dog. For compost for the garden, we compost our food waste and throw in the same amount of dead leaves. If you have a bunch of dead leaves and not enough food waste, you can get coffee grinds from Starbucks. -
sandy spears 5/17/2019 1:29 PMWhy? I saw the movie Trashed and I switched from being a regular basic recycler into high gear on reducing trash and recycling. Here's a blog on what specific things I do to help. https://world.350.org/houston/bi-reduce-trash-recycling-80/
