REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Nancy Ross 6/29/2019 8:48 AMThis is easy for me because I never used a straw anyway. It is more of a challenge for my elderly mom in assisted living, so I purchased her metal straws. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste MealDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Nancy Ross 6/29/2019 8:47 AMThis is really challenging. Despite my efforts to buy in bulk and using string produce bags, my current spice supply is in plastic bottles and meat is wrapped in plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy Unpackaged ProduceWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Nancy Ross 6/29/2019 8:43 AMI guess I talked about this above, but how do you deal with cashiers removing produce from your cloth bags and laying them on dirty scales where meat has also been placed? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Nancy Ross 6/29/2019 8:42 AMI have purchased some string mesh bags for produce. The cashiers take everything out and lay my veggies on the weighing machine where meat has also sat. I need to work on a solution to this potential eColi problem. Anyone else dealt with this issue?-
Nancy Ross 6/29/2019 9:36 AMThat is good to know about Whole Foods. The challenge will be to help Giant Eagle understand the importance of helping us be plastic free. My impression is that many more folks shop at GE than WF. GE doesn’t even have very many paper bags. -
Carol White 6/29/2019 9:25 AMI haven't had that problem as I've been shopping at Whole Foods and they understand how to weigh the produce in the bag and deduct the tare weight. This might be a good opportunity to educate the cashiers and managers on how reusable bags work and get them on board with the idea.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Shop the Bulk BinsHow has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think Western society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?
Nancy Ross 6/29/2019 8:39 AMThe nuts and seeds I buy in bulk are just as good as those in pre-packaged containers. I use paper bags and transfer them to plastic containers I wash and reuse. My grocery store (Giant Eagle) seems to be phasing out bulk for pre-packaged. I will send a comment letter to emphasize the importance of bulk and non- plastic containers.
