This was the first time I participated in an eco-challenge. I wish I had done more but many of the suggested activities were things I was already doing. BTW, I have saved more than 1 plastic container from going to a landfill though you cannot tell by my dashboard. The EcoChallenge enabled me to do additional research as well as learn what others are doing to minimize their environmental footprint. I found it inspiring to read about the creativity and suggestions offered as well as the sense of community within the postings I read. I think many people are concerned about the environment and the health consequences we will be facing if we all don't do our part to reduce waste, conserve resources and modify our lifestyle.

What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

Until I participated in this challenge, I had no idea that plastic was incorporated into some of the fabrics that make up our clothing. I usually read food and clothing labels for nutrition content and origin and fabric content. Going forward I am determined to make clothing purchases that do not contain plastic (polyester for example). It also never dawned on me that when we wash clothes, the plastic particles end up in our water system and you know the rest of that story. Plastic is ingested by animals and people and that's not good!

What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

While I have not switched to a steel razor, I have reduced my usage of disposable razors as I had laser hair removal performed on my legs and underarms many years ago. Now I only need to do a touch up now and then. I have also not purchased large cans or tubes of shave gel for this same reason so in some sense I have reduced my usage of disposable razors/shave gels.

I want to research and make an insect repellant that is safe and effective to use on horses so that we do not have to use harmful chemicals on them at the barn where I volunteer. I will look for a container that is not plastic and that will hold the essential oils and water that I know will be required in the formula.

  kudos to you for making your own, but if you choose to buy i tried the Spalding Labs eco-friendly product this year and we love it! works great and smells even better :-) Concentrated spray comes in plastic bottles but they are working on re-fills in pouches. https://www.spalding-labs.com/products/fly_control_products/fly_sprays/default.aspx We use the fly predators for natural fly control as well.
