  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

This one was way easier than it should have been. Any day I was at work I would go out and walk the grounds to pick up a few things. Days I was at home, I just had to walk down the front of my yard, we live on a main road, and I was able to locate several pieces of trash. :(
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Containers
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

This is an everyday for our family - I package all our leftovers in reusable containers and label them with post-it notes so we know when they're safe to eat. Packing lunches for myself and Maddie may take a larger lunch box, but the fruit and animal crackers didn't get squished so it's a double win!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Smart
How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

Traveling to an in-town conference and using reusable materials was pretty easy - especially since the conference heavily promoted sustainable choices. I did manage to misplace two of my reusable straws over the course of the week which is a bummer...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible Cup
Great job on getting rid of your disposable cup habit! How does it make you feel? What's next on your list to reduce your waste?

I stepped this one up by seeing how many beverages I could do in reusable mugs - bringing gatorade powder in my water bottle each morning and filling it up mid-day cut way back on plastic bottles in my house as well as the plastic rings that hold the bottles. Saves time not having to cut those up into little pieces, too!

I brought a gatorade to a meeting last week and was called out for having a one-time plastic bottle by a colleague. Last weekend I bought a tub of gatorade powder and have been mixing my own in my reusable mug since. Haven't quite got the ratio of powder to water correct in my small water bottle that I take running. I had to chew my gatorade last time I ran!

love this one - I would love for it to be applied at our Zoo!! My kids are in sports and we were also purchasing Gatorade bottles - we made the switch to Gatorade powder which also saves us $$!! :)

I attended the Visitor Studies Association conference the last few days, it was hosted in Detroit. The conference committee focused on having a 'green' conference and provided a way for attendees to track their green actions through the conference app. It was really neat to see how many actions over just a three-day period added up. It was also wonderful to see almost everyone carrying a reusable water bottle or mug during the conference!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family Thoughtful Toys
Does your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?

My girls play with anything and everything, they're just as happy in a cardboard box as they are with an overly complex Lego set that takes three hours to assemble Christmas morning... and one of those is much less expensive than the other... and less painful to step on...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets Pet Waste
By composting your pet waste, you are turning waste into nutrients to feed the soil. In what other ways can you turn waste into a resource in your life?

Choose your waste tank spot carefully - digging through tons of roots is not enjoyable...
