Julie's presentation helped me understand how our small daily choices fit into the bigger picture. The benefit is that I will make more informed choices when shopping for food and other materials!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

Nearly every time I have walked around picking up litter, someone else passes by and thanks me! That simple interaction makes me more connected with neighbors. You also grow more invested in taking care of the community.

The days I haven't met this goal were usually because I remembered to pick up litter but forgot to put my work gloves in my purse. I can live a greener life if I simply plan ahead!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

We can advocate by setting an example of bringing our own and by asking companies to offer reusable flatware when possible. For instance, our extended stay hotel sometimes offers reusable flatware but other times only has plastics available. We can ask them to be consistent about offering reusable dishes and flatware to align more closely with their own sustainability goals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Smart
How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

I think we were pretty successful with bringing our own water bottles, cloth napkins, and silverware! We felt great every time we were able to refuse single-use plastics. We received some positive feedback from people about bringing our own water bottles. Next time I will come prepared with a better way to wash our items as we travel.

Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

Well, I brought the Tupperware with me on the trip, but we ended up getting caught unprepared a couple of times. For instance, we left our containers at the hotel one time when we went to a place we thought was a sit-down restaurant with plates, etc., but that ended up being a brewery plus a food cart. This was a good learning experience!

This July, I'll be moving from Oregon to Illinois. I'm excited to pick up litter in 11 states and minimize plastic waste on our week-long road trip. I know it will be tough. Looking forward to reading the team posts for inspiration!
