REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Travel SmartHow can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?
Laura Heck 7/31/2019 6:40 AMThe key is to pack snacks in reusable containers, bring reusable bottles (for hot and cold drinks). Keep in mind dense snacks such as nuts are difficult for TSA to screen and you may be pulled aside. I found that if I pack nuts in a flatter rectangular container, I'm less likely to be delayed. You can dine plastic free at sit down restaurants if you have the extra time, funds, and if the option is available. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Laura Heck 7/29/2019 7:07 AMI'm somewhat allergic to certain synthetic fibers, so I search for clothing with cotton or linen most of the time. Lately I learned how some synthetic fibers are leaching into the water supply as microplastics. My goal is to only purchase clothing with natural fibers going forward, unless I don't have a choice. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Laura Heck 7/17/2019 6:42 AMThe most difficult part of this challenge is to redistribute my reusable bags back to our cars and backpacks after they are used. All the bags end up in one closet in my house, which doesn't help if I'm at the store. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Laura Heck 7/17/2019 6:40 AMSome of our local coffee shops started hiding straws or providing hay straws. It makes you think twice about whether or not you even need a straw for your drink. Many sit-down restaurants still automatically provide a straw, so I try to let the server know ahead of time that I don't need one. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Laura Heck 7/17/2019 6:38 AMIn our office we have reusable cutlery for everyone however we always run into a problem when lunch is ordered for the office. Often times catering orders come with plastic cutlery. We can solve this problem by making the statement or adding a note not to bring plastic cutlery with any orders that we place.
