Carrie Hawthorne 7/16/2019 5:07 AMMenstrual products are an immense source of plastic pollution in the world. I wrote to the company and that I really like their mission, but was disappointed to learn they didn’t use a plastic alternative or recycled plastic in there applicators. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Share My ActionsIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Carrie Hawthorne 7/10/2019 12:16 PMI switched away from cotton rounds for my makeup removal to a reusable fleece option. I posted my new routine on my social media platforms and people were inspired to learn that there was an alternative - I have already shared the link to buy them to at least 5 people :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy Unpackaged ProduceWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Carrie Hawthorne 7/10/2019 12:14 PMI haven't used plastic produce bags for years, but never really considered the produce I buy that is packaged in plastic (lettuce mix, cherry tomatoes, berries, etc). This month I am challenging myself to only buy free floating produce; nothing in a plastic container. I am blown away by the sheer amount of fruits and veggies being housed in plastic! Eyes opened! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Write Letters or EmailsHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?
Carrie Hawthorne 7/10/2019 12:13 PMI ordered some small items of clothing from the Gap a few weeks ago and they arrived yesterday. Each item was individually wrapped in its own plastic bag...it was crazy! And the bags were giant compared the the clothing item. I messaged Gap on Facebook and suggested that for Plastic Free July they could evaluate their packaging and opt for something more biodegradable. They responded! WooHoo! -
Carrie Hawthorne 7/01/2019 12:13 PMI was at the beach and made a point to pick up any plastic litter I found - 3 straws, a plastic bag, a ziploc bag, and a bunch of snack bags...all things that didn't need to be made/used in the first place. It felt good to clean up but also a good reminder that these things live forever in our oceans and we really don't need to use them!
