Create Your Own Action
Compost at work
Our department at work has never composted before. I'm going to help set up designated compost piles for our animal enrichment and waste so that we can dispose of it properly! I will also help change our department's mindset so that we are more aware of other things we can do to be more eco-friendly.

Alison Day 7/31/2019 7:11 PMI've started composting at work, and I've been researching compost bins for home! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Write Letters or EmailsHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?
Alison Day 7/31/2019 7:08 PMObviously what we're doing now is not solving the plastic problem, so thinking outside the box, and encouraging others to, is the only way things will change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Visit A Waste Management FacilityLandfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your visit?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Lather UpWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Alison Day 7/31/2019 7:04 PMObviously less plastic! I'm not a huge fan of bar soap, though. I'm not ready to change my shampoo habits just yet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Visit the ButcherHow has using your own containers impacted the quality of the food you receive? Does this give you more awareness of where your food comes from as opposed to just grabbing a package of mystery origin cheese/meat?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Start CompostingDo an inventory of how much food waste you would save from going to the landfill if you start composting all of the time. What are the added benefits of having compost that is readily accessible?
Alison Day 7/31/2019 7:00 PMI waste a lot of produce, so at least composting it will be a better result. Maybe composting will make me more aware of how much food I'm wasting and help me reduce that. -
Alison Day 7/29/2019 6:43 PMI started using bar soap instead of body wash. I'm not a huge fan, but I have enough bars for about 6 months. Maybe I'll change my mind by then. :) -
Alison Day 7/29/2019 6:38 PMI recently went to a hole-in-the-wall Greek restaurant that puts all their food in styrofoam containers. I brought my own Tupperware container and asked if I could get my meal in that instead. The employee was very nice and I think he even gave me more food than I normally would have gotten! This is the first time I've tried this, because I've been nervous of the reaction I would get. But I was pleasantly surprised! -
Alison Day 7/29/2019 6:36 PMAfter trying to use my own container in the bulk aisle at Kroger and being told I had to use their plastic bags, I sent an email to Kroger's customer service staff. I asked if, in the future, they could allow customers to bring their containers and get them weighed to help reduce plastic usage, especially considering Kroger is trying to be more environmentally friendly with their future initiatives. I am waiting for their response!
