Just got back from Mexico and did fairly well avoiding plastic. One restaurant had multiple signs that said 'skip the straw. We only bring them upon request.'. I was so excited and happy until my drink came with a straw. I explained my disappointment to the waiter who blamed the new guy, we had a conversation but he didn't seem to interested. Channeling my frustration into hope that some guests will see the sign and think twice about plastic in the future.
The other trouble was at the airport where there wasn't a water fountain to refill my water bottle, so I had to purchase tea in a glass container as opposed to a plastic single use bottle.
A few restaurants had paper straws and I ensured to thank the waiter!

I am so inspired by all of you!! Keep the awesome ideas coming. I am heading to Mexico in a few days, all of my family is now so good about asking for no straw. Some places we have been to have paper straws. Hopefully I see that as well in this new place I am visiting.
