I watched "Albatross" the film last night after reading that someone had a screening of it for Plastic Free July. The preview alone is super depressing but the actual film is focuses more on the actual bird life cycle but with a strong message about plastic waste. Recommend it, but warning that it is hard to watch!

Here's an article on microplastics from the IISD who is currently studying a lake in the Experimental Lakes Area for this specific topic. Curious what their findings will be down the road!

    Food Shop the Bulk Bins
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think Western society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

I love bulk foods, but I always find the cost higher for the quantity.
That being said, I visited Bulk Barn and stocked up on everything from grains to treats and got it all at 20% for Plastic Free July!

    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

It's pretty disgusting the amount of plastic in everything. Even though I thought I was pretty conscious of my purchases and reducing waste, this challenge has really highlighted how plastic pervades everything.
One big switch I've made is to use better toilet paper- recycled, not bleached, and wrapped in paper! I did have to order this online so there are definite downfalls in that, but some improvement and hope I can find it locally soon!

Where did you order it from? Definitely interested in plastic free toilet paper.

Another question, does anyone have good alternatives for freezing food not using jars or Ziplocks?

Sure!! I am in the process of creating all the questions. Some of them apply only to the Toronto Zoo as we host Washed Ashore and some of them are fun/entertainment based questions but if you'd like I can send you the slideshow in the PDF when I am finished. email me at abrown@torontozoo.ca and say hello, that way I will have your email address on hand:) Cheers!

Does anyone have any recommendations of documentaries that they've seen that were really impactful on their lives?

It shows that I actually care about the environment around me, not just for myself but for everyone. If you show you care, hopefully they will care too!

How could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?

    C-Jae Breiter's avatar
    C-Jae Breiter 7/16/2019 6:54 AM
I wanted to order Skip the Dishes recently, but knew there's would be so much waste, so instead went to the restaurant with my own containers and asked if they could fill them. They were fine with it, but I can imagine not being there in person would've made that more difficult. I was prepared to leave the restaurant without buying anything if they wouldn't let me use the containers.

So far decently well. I picked some challenges that are recognized as daily challenges; however, don't apply to me on a daily basis (i.e. I don't shop every day of the week)

I'll submit this suggestion to the organizers of the challenge!
