Terrific challenge this year! A few habits I picked up which will likely stick:

    1. Bamboo toothbrushes
    2. Toothpowder (packaged in glass - not plastic)
    3. Plogging - picking up litter while running
    4. Chip bags...will take more effort I think...I do miss their crunchy saltiness so much!
Getting a bit more "granola" every year :)

Missed you all this weekend at the clean up around Green Lake on Sunday! If you're bummed you missed out and still want to participate - you're in luck! They do this every Sunday morning and he has a nice model to follow if you have a site around your home you'd like to 'adopt'. The guy who leads it (Todd) even has a website - https://greenlakelitterpatrol.com/. Who knows - maybe you'll find $50 like Todd did or a pocked knife like I did among the rubbish.

How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

Last work trip I traveled with my camping spoon/fork combo and used it in the hotel. Was a discussion point with my colleague during breakfast. Also traveled with my own re-usable coffee/water bottle. I refuse to engage in all the single use packaging involved with making coffee in your hotel room - would rather walk and get the equally crappy coffee from the lobby :)

Figured since I was going to be out on the water for a full week :) I would go ‘plogging’ along 76th and Olympic view. Lots of butts - picked up at least 20. Wondering how many butts are tossed on the ground every year? It’s estimated there are 4.5 TRILLION...per year! They persist in the environment for around 15 years leaching all those goodies into the environment.

If you’re a runner, give plogging a try - it helps distract from the pain of running ;)

Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

When I shop, Jennie thankfully does most of it, I notice there are no plastic free options for tooth care. I just emailed QFC asking them to include this in their 'zero waste' campaign. If they start selling the plastic free items there - I would much prefer to purchase them at QFC than ordering on Amazon.

There are some really neat package free options from Package Free Shop based in Brooklyn! They ship all over and the box your goods come in is either compostable or recyclable.

What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

Keeping all those single use, non-recyclable bottles out of the landfills, incinerators, or ocean. It was a relatively easy change - just needed an all-in-one bar of soap and a container for it. It has always bothered me so I'm happy to make the change permanent.

Used Dr. Bronners all-in-one tonight instead of the supplied soaps - felt like a bad-ass.

Jennie and I picked up some trash along the meadowdale beach today - logged it with Ocean Conservancy’s Clean Swell app. Mostly found small bits of foam and plastic but also a few large pieces. All in all - maybe a couple lbs of trash removed. wasn’t all work though - found a natural teeter totter on the beach. Too fun!

How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

I enjoy cleaning things up in the community and always feel great after doing so - similar to any other volunteer effort where you're doing something for the greater good of all of us humans and our common home. Organizing and planning is what takes the most effort. Jennie was able to adopt a local street in our neighborhood last year and she's been leading the charge on organizing the bi-annual cleanup.

Used tooth powder for the first time last night - turned out much better than the stuff I made last year! Quite tasty actually. Viva Doria Tooth Powers - Mint flavor if you want to try some yourself.
