REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusables at WorkIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Kelly Bayer 7/17/2019 1:17 PMI keep a spoon stashed in my cubby and use it whenever I make tea, to stir, instead of getting a new spoon everytime. I also use a mug for water instead of plastic cups. Just doing this may catch the attention of some people, which in time may give them the motivation and courage to do the same thing themself. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Shop the Bulk BinsHow has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think Western society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?
Kelly Bayer 7/17/2019 1:16 PMAvoiding packaged foods usually means I am buying fresher foods...answering the promt quesion about why Western society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk--probably has to do with food safety laws and the fact that a lot of our food is grown in concentrated parts of the country and then is shipped around the country, if we purchased more from local sources we could probably reduce packaging. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible CupGreat job on getting rid of your disposable cup habit! How does it make you feel? What's next on your list to reduce your waste?
Kelly Bayer 7/17/2019 1:10 PMOn days when I remember to bring my reusable cup with me, everything is groovy and I feel great. On days when I forget and "need" a coffee on the go, I feel guilty! So trying to remember to prioritize giving up plastic over getting that coffee when I dont have my reusable mug. Next on my list? Well, I still need to get this one down. Next on my list is probably buying things in bulk to eliminate those dang containers. -
Kelly Bayer 7/15/2019 7:26 AMThe other day I bought a chai at Starbucks and asked for no lid, the cashier said ok, then the barista informed me that he HAD to give me a lid. I told him no, I don't want a lid, but he gave me one anyway. That was upsetting to me. It gave me more incentive to bring my own container around, to avoid this type of conflict, even though its cumbersome to bring around an extra cup. Guess it makes me plan my days better, if I think I'm going to have a coffee on the go, I guess I'll decide in the morning that day. Really ticked me off that Starbucks wouldn't bend the rules to eliminate plastic waste. Sigh. I understand why they have rigid policies though. Just bothered me.-

Kelly Bayer 7/04/2019 6:30 AMThe hardest thing has been eating out and remembering to state before ordering that I'm avoiding plastics so please no plastic containers. The other day I ate at a Vientnamese Restaurant and asked about the cups they would use for bubble tea (plastic, so I did not order) BUT I did't think to ask about anything else...turns out the dipping sauce for my salad rolls were disposable containers...next time I would explain myself in the beginning of the order to see if they wouldn't mind skipping the excess plastic for me.
