I will spend 5 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Write Letters or Emails
I will write 1 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for planet-friendly policies.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Community
Visit A Waste Management Facility
I will visit a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about the waste stream.
Food
Lobby for Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Shop the Bulk Bins
I will purchase dry goods from the bulk section of my grocery store, and use my own containers to do so.
Food
Skip the Straw
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.

I will plant an herb or vegetable garden in my home, workplace, or community garden

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Write Letters or EmailsHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?
Taylor Arave 7/10/2019 9:47 AMCreative solutions is the only way to fix out current plastic pollution problem. The easiest or most obvious solutions to this problem will almost certainly involve drastic changes to our current life styles or have other effects that hurt the environment in different ways. Another way creative Solutions helps is that the plastic industry lobbies the US government to not change anything and to keep using single use plastics. This is not something that will likely go away anytime soon, so we need to find creative ways to fix this problem without going through congress. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Discover TogetherWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Taylor Arave 7/06/2019 6:26 PMI spent about 30 minutes talking with my sister about ideas to reduce waste in their new home. They are very very excited to own there first home but also concerned that they will live a less sustainable/environmentally friendly life in their new home. My sister is planning a composting area, a garden covering a lot of the yard and taking her own cotton bags to the store. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Taylor Arave 7/06/2019 6:22 PMI bought a shirt today and instead of buying the slightly cheaper polyester blend, I bought the 100% cotton.
