This was difficult but fun. I have learned to use mason jars and make more foods from scratch. And I have also learned to go without things that, in the past, I felt like I needed but turns out not so much. I feel like it's a bit hard to have bulk options in a small town vs a city, and this might have been easier if I had been in Denver or Albuquerque, but that's not my fate.

It’s hard to check in every day...but I’m doing this.

I haven’t checked in here in many days...my refilling station just hit over 5000 single-use plastic containers saved...needless to say, I’ve been busier doing my own ecochallenge, which has helped 100s of others do their own part. I’m tired. I think I deserve 5000 points for those bottles not in circulation. Now I will sleep for a night & day. Thank you all that are committed. Much love

How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

This past week I had the opportunity to educate frequent travelers about TSA approved alternative to ziplock bags for carry-on items.
Some of this is easy for me because I work with my daughter in her dynamite "refilling" store, WeFill.   www.wefillcolorado.com

Okay, I've been doing this, but always forget to check in. I have started making bread in a bread maker I got at the flea market. It's actually really good and the bread maker makes it super easy. And the bread is delicious and organic. I am not sure why I didn't do this before. My next flea market purchase will have to be a yogurt maker. I still need cheese. My sister told me to go to the grocery deli with some tin foil and ask for the cheese wrapped in that. I can also go to the expensive cheese store. I am going to try to go to the local taco place with a paper bag and buy chips. I am dying for chips.

This is my second year doing no plastic July, last year being more casual.
This year I'm preach every time I get a chance; and I get lots of chances as I help out in my daugher's store, WeFill, in Durango CO.

I'm choosing my actions to walk the talk.

I raised $552 forcAlbatross, the film, by presenting to my community. The entire theatre was in tears & many have reached out to me since, telling me about their plastic-free pledges. This deserves 100 points

I took my reusable silicone container to the deli department of my grocery store, asking the deli person to fill it up with what I wanted to buy, explaining that I was participating in No Plastic July.  She was impressed with my efforts and even tared the weight.  The check out person was also curious and impressed with my effort to minimize my use of plastic. Conversations begun!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

Harder than I thought! Plastic is everywhere.
