Create Your Own Action

Write One Letter

Find one company that needs to hear about its plastic transgressions and write one letter asking them to change. Example: Paul Newman's pasta sauce used to be sold in glass jars, but now it only comes in plastic containers. Another example: NutriBullet blade assembly is a combo of plastic and metal. They need to allow customers to send those back to be refurbished.

It seems like I spend lots of money on potting soil every year, and it all comes in plastic bags. I make sure to cut the bags at the top and once they're empty, I rinse them and re-use them to take my recycling to the transfer station. This year, I found a way to avoid the whole situation since the horse farm near my house is very happy for me to take material from their pile of composting manure. I do collect it in plastic 5-gallon buckets, though. And yesterday, I found some turtle eggs, which I assumed were snapping turtles, but it seems more likely are sliders, since there were only about a dozen of them. Being careful to keep them oriented the same way I found them, I transferred them to a large pot of manure, and will try to keep them safe from marauders. How fun that would be to see them hatch!

A friend gave me his leftover perennial native flowers (and there are lots of them), so this year in addition to the usual vegetables, I'm installing a pollinator garden.  I'll also create a couple more gardens on the slope above my pond. I'm lucky because the horse farm on the corner has a big pile of composted manure they want to get rid of, so I load up my reclaimed 5-gallon buckets, and then I'm amazed at just how much material it takes to build a new garden. I'm quite the re-user of 5-gallon buckets, as long as they only contain the remnants of something water-soluble and not terribly toxic, like joint compound or latex paint. Even when they develop cracks in the bottom, they're great for storing compost, since they drain.
