REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsSingle use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?
Joe Younkin 7/29/2019 1:16 PMThe challenge I had when informing family members about the issue with single-use plastics is keeping them focused on IT as an issue without them going into ALL of the other issues plaguing our world: "why should I worry about this when people are not aware of this in India or China?" "Those countries negatively impact the environment more than the US!"
We can all do our little part, and if everyone does their little part, it makes a big impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Buy Only What I NeedAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Joe Younkin 7/18/2019 10:24 AMAs a result of me reducing my spending, I've noticed that I do not miss a lot of the stuff I used to purchase that I thought made life more fun and enjoyable. I have just as much fun, if not more, and get plenty of enjoyment without those things. Also, I eat better because I eat at home more. -
Joe Younkin 7/18/2019 10:13 AMHey guys....check out this article (https://www.fastcompany.com/40538704/can-you-imagine-a-supermarket-with-no-plastic) for a great alternative to plastic. Now if manufacturers can just implement bioplastics in their supply chain. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Watch a DocumentaryWhich documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?
Joe Younkin 7/16/2019 9:53 AMI chose to watch the documentary "Bag It" with my kids and it was a reopening of my eyes. My kids thought it was depressing to think about. I agree, but it has made me think more about my single-use/disposable plastic use. I think plastic and its effect on the environment is well-known, but, for a myriad of reasons, have not dealt with it. We can do our part by reducing or eliminating single-use plastic options, but it needs to start with policy and decision makers in Congress and the corporate offices of these manufacturing companies who decide to package things in plastic. My takeaway was a line from the episode that went something like: companies package things that will be used/consumed in 15 minutes in something that will last almost forever. -
Joe Younkin 7/12/2019 7:36 AMI plan to watch watch "True Cost", "Minimalism", "A Plastic Ocean", and "Bag It" documentary films about waste with family and friends this weekend. I watched the trailers and they remind me of what I all already know, but ignore and try not to think about everyday. -
Joe Younkin 7/03/2019 11:55 AMSo far so good. I'm glad this isn't a challenge to stay away from sugar...I like brownies and cookies too much!-
Taylor Johnson 7/03/2019 11:59 AMNow thatttt would truly be a challenge.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Joe Younkin 7/03/2019 11:52 AMThis challenge is a bit difficult because of the convenience of the disposable plastic bags already at the stores. What makes this easier is planning trips to the grocery store, for example. Making a list beforehand usually reminds me to grab my reusable bags before I go. -
Joe Younkin 7/02/2019 1:04 PMI find myself picking up trash more as I walk around due to this friendly challenge. Wow, I'm slightly competitive! -
Joe Younkin 6/25/2019 5:35 AMI have to admit...trying to go plastic free is very challenging, given how everyday things/items are pre-packaged. That being said, if I have a sweet tooth, instead of buying a package of cookies, I will make them at home. It's a start!-
