I am taking advantage of a program that Philadelphia introduced to provide free recycling bin lids. Previously, even folks who recycle would sometimes contribute to the litter problem because their recycling bins would blow over or get pushed over by a critter overnight, and recyclables blow away. Now, with a simple fix, Philadelphia has the opportunity to cut down on recyclable litter by almost 15%, just by providing a lid for the city recyclable container.

Bett Williams 7/12/2019 12:00 PMEven though I havent been able to log in every day and post my actions, I have been working to reduce my plastic use every day since this challenge started. It really becomes evident when visiting the grocery store how difficult it is to go 100% plastic free. Even when purchasing items in glass jars, there is still a plastic security seal most of the time. But, making conscious decisions has really been fun and made me consider other ways to reduce overreliance on plastic.
So far, I've ditched single use plastics by purchasing canned goods instead of plastics, making homemade yogurt, cottage cheese, cream cheese, and hummus, plus I've stopped bagging individual produce items whenever possible. All of these things have contributed to less trash at the end of the week, and its energizing to have a new goal that will become habit. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Homemade CleanersWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Bett Williams 7/12/2019 11:37 AM
I reused some mason jars to mix up a simple disinfectant using some essential oils in a glass bottle, and rubbing alcohol, unfortunately in a plastic bottle. -

Adele Philippides 6/27/2019 7:22 AMI see you are in PA. I'm in crisis mode trying to get in touch with people in this state who care... The state house of representatives is trying to prevent municipalities from banning or restricting plastics ( such as plastic bag bans). We need to call our representatives and try to get this removed! It seems to be a part of the budget.
