Peggy Sullivan 7/31/2019 2:02 PMWaited until the last day, but ordered my bamboo toothbrushes online. -
Peggy Sullivan 7/31/2019 1:57 PMFirst attracted by the name but also by the fact that rolls are paper-wrapped, not plastic, I ordered Who Gives a Crap USA toilet paper. This attached chart shows how name brands stack up on sustainability. -
Peggy Sullivan 7/30/2019 12:45 PMAfter making iced tea at hone and baking bread, my daughter found this relic from my parents’ home. Sunsweet Prune juice bottled their juice in this reusable glass bottle with water imprinted on one side and juice imprinted on the other. We’ll use it for iced tea. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Write Letters or EmailsHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?
Peggy Sullivan 7/30/2019 12:40 PMPeople don’t seem to like to be legislated to do the right thing, so writing letters and convincing companíes to do the right thing is a better route to take. -
Peggy Sullivan 7/29/2019 4:20 PMPaper bags for kitty poop worked well. Expanded to second litter box! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Brusha Brusha BrushaWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Peggy Sullivan 7/28/2019 5:09 PMIt would keep plastic out of landfills and provide a quality replacement. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using resusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable cutlery, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Peggy Sullivan 7/26/2019 5:53 PMI will continue to write my restaurants to tell them that disposable cutlery need not be added to take-out orders unless requested since most people take the food home anyway. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Peggy Sullivan 7/26/2019 5:50 PMGreen Turtle restaurants in Maryland offer only paper straws when requested and do not provide plastic at all. I'm hoping that many of fast food places that I frequent will eventually get the hint (and read my emails) to offer straws only when requested. As for me, I'll use my reusable straw at home and continue to deny them when offered. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable ContainersHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Peggy Sullivan 7/26/2019 5:47 PMI started composting at my volunteer job, and that habit came home with me. I need to start growing some vegetables at home and get a small compost bin. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy Unpackaged ProduceWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Peggy Sullivan 7/26/2019 5:45 PMI believe that plastic was the easy solution for the producer and the distributor. The consumer has gotten so used to using plastic to preserve leftovers, that it has become second nature and a hard habit to break. I've moved to multiple-use plastic and wax-covered wrap for leftovers, and I've tried to prepare meals that would not leave leftovers after all.
