What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

I found out that washing polyester/plastic/fleece clothing can release hundreds of thousands of microplastic fibers into the water supply--some of which will make their way to the ocean and into the stomachs of ocean animals. I do have fleece vests- but I don't wash them often, and now will wash them even LESS often.
