Create Your Own Action

Don’t throw away, recycle for another day!

Got Styrofoam? Don't throw it away! Calgary may not accept it as a recyclable material but Cochrane does! Why not collect any Styrofoam you encounter and save it for a drive up to beautiful Cochrane? The Styrofoam can be recycled and repurposed and you can get ice cream! I call that a Win Win situation! :)

Throughout the entire month I started replacing everyday items with better eco friendly and waste free alternatives. This challenge really opened my eyes to how much people rely on convenient and disposal items. I plan to continue using waste free products and continue looking for more eco friendly ways to live my day to day life. I'm excited for next year to see how far I've come.

Found this great article that looks at products most people use daily or consider necessities and offers great alternative solutions to them all.

I rely heavily on lip balm and apply some several times daily.  I have a home lip balm, a work lip balm and if I had a car there would most definitely be a car lip balm.  I shudder to think how many lip balm plastic tubes exist in the landfill because of my consumption.  This is something I’d like to change so I’ve started looking up some zero waste alternatives.  DIY lip balm looks incredibly simple and fun!  There are many recipes out there but this article provided a lot of info and even provided info on an online store that supplies the ingredients in glass containers and offers re-fills!  Links are below!

Great article about plastic free makeup and brands.  Some of these offer refills as well!  I definitely plan to look into these!

Does anyone know where in Calgary I can buy vinegar that doesn't come in a plastic jug?

I love bubble tea!  I do not love all the plastic waste that comes with it.  The cup, the lid and the straw are usually completely made out of plastic and intended for a single use.  Since the start of July I have avoided purchasing any bubble tea but I may have found a solution.  There is a Vancouver based company tackling the issue with reusable bubble tea cups, straws and lids.  What makes bubble tea straws different from regular straws is their thickness.  They have to be large enough to suck up those delicious tapioca pearls (aka the bubbles). This company is also trying to be mindful of their environmental impact during production process.  They’ve chosen a distributer that ships the products in craft paper rather than plastic, and the shipment box has minimal plastic.  Their goal was to help customers reduce their use of plastic so their company aims to do the same as well.

My bamboo toothbrushes arrived in the mail yesterday!  I'm excited to try them out and abandon the use of plastic toothbrushes forever.  I did a lot of reading about which eco brand to go with and decided to try Brush with Bamboo.  Here's a helpful article that helped me make my choice:
