REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Minimize PackagingWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Shelley Shrader 7/31/2019 12:31 PMI eliminated single plastic wrapped cheese this month. I’m still not satisfied with the amount of plastic around every type of cheese but I will continue to look or I won’t eat it as much, maybe even buy it in bulk! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Shelley Shrader 7/31/2019 12:30 PMThis is pretty similar to my reusable produce bags but I will say when I check out at Rouse’s they don’t even think it’s weird if I ask for no bags at all! Any time I go to target or Walmart I get very strange looks -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Visit the ButcherHow has using your own containers impacted the quality of the food you receive? Does this give you more awareness of where your food comes from as opposed to just grabbing a package of mystery origin cheese/meat?
Shelley Shrader 7/31/2019 12:28 PMThis was a pretty scary challenge for me-having yo ask for something more at a store. But I found people are pretty easy going about what you want and I shouldn’t be so scared to say no to single-use plastics! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusables at WorkIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Shelley Shrader 7/31/2019 12:26 PMThis was extremely easy to do at the Aquarium because the volunteer lounge has its own kitchen! Even on days where I forgot to pack reusable utensils I could find a fork to use -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy Unpackaged ProduceWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Shelley Shrader 7/31/2019 12:12 PMThis was a surprisingly easy task. If you don’t get a produce bag-no one cares! I do have reusable produce bags but I often forget them so I just don’t use them! -
Shelley Shrader 7/31/2019 12:10 PMThey should definitely add a one time challenge for traveling during the month of July. I have found airports and flights particularly difficult to find things that don’t have single use plastics! On all my feedbacks for flights I have put use less single use plastics! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Shelley Shrader 7/20/2019 6:45 PMVolunteering in my own community is easier said than done. It’s hard to commit to work on your days off, but I did it! I volunteered at a local animal shelter and went and walked some dogs! Yay me! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Watch a DocumentaryWhich documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?
Shelley Shrader 7/17/2019 5:11 PMI have had 16 students in my training group all watch different documentaries! We have watched Chasing Coral, A plastic Ocean, and Mission Blue!
Not to mention our countless episodes of Blue Planet! We love the Ocean -
Shelley Shrader 7/17/2019 5:07 PMI am avoiding a lot more foods at the grocery store.
