Also checked out the so-called 'green' products aisle at HEB last night. They had plenty of paper towels and bath tissue made of 100% recycled materials...and entirely wrapped in plastic. The failboat sails merrily on...
Got the butcher to pack chicken in my reusable container, no problem. While riding high on that success asked the guy at the deli to wrap my cheese and ham in paper instead of plastic. He agreed...then gave me shrink-wrapped cheese that had already been packaged in the amount I needed. Thanks.for.that. At least he did the ham in paper...
PFJ is good motivation for trying new recipes. Yesterday’s lunch was sweet potatoes, carrots, onion, pears, and apricots roasted in olive oil, cumin, and cinnamon, on a bed of couscous and topped with raisins and cashews, plus cucumber salad with fresh mint and parsley from the garden and lime and vinegar dressing. Takes a bit of prep time but definitely worth it!
Today's no-waste, plastic-free lunch: lentils (bought in bulk), potatoes, scallions, fresh oregano from the garden, olive oil, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, and feta, served on a bed of lettuce, packed in a bamboo fiber bowl, and snarfed using real cutlery. Yum!
FYI, HEB deli staff are not allowed to pack anything in containers shoppers bring in themselves, but they will wrap meats and cheeses in butcher paper instead if you request it. Why that isn't still standard practice is a mystery to me...
Bamboo fiber bowl? Check. Reusable cutlery and mug? Check. Homemade zero-waste meal cooked using produce purchased without packaging? Check. Tasty and guilt-free!
